I started quilting, five months ago, using a very basic machine (another brand). There was nothing wrong with my basic machine. I was able to piece and free-motion (up and down stitches only) quilt finished pieces, but after increased exposure to the world of quilting, I wanted more in my machine. I wanted a thread cutter, a needle up/down setting, a knee lift, different types of feet, and a larger throat space. I also wanted to try other FMQ stitch designs that my basic machine could not handle. For some reason, my basic machine didn't like FMQ unless I used up and down maneuvers only. I had thread tension problems. I was also tired of having to change my front-loading bobbin case. The bobbin case always fell apart. I researched several machines and my decision came down to this model or the Janome 6500/6600. I didn't need the additional types of stitches, so I chose the 6300. The machine is heavy but setup was a breeze. The manual is very easy to read. I love the top-loading bobbin case. Basically, you just drop the case in and you're ready to sew. I started sewing the day it arrived and I loved the difference I felt. I use the thread cutter and needle down position quite a bit. Oddly, I haven't touched the knee-lifter. I was so enamoured with the other features, that I haven't used it yet. I've used four of the many feet that were included. There are two others that I can see myself using. The extra 3 inches I have in throat space has made a huge difference. I don't have to fight with my pieces as much as I had to before when I quilted. Most importantly, I can now attempt any design of my choosing as I free-motion quilt with this machine. The machine is very sturdy. I've used it almost every day since I purchased it and I haven't had any problems. There are no negatives with this machine, but if there was something that I wish I could have instead of this, I think I would need to look into buying a mid-arm or long-arm machine. But for everyday quitling and even for sewing fabrics that aren't quilts, I have no remorse about my purchase. I'll be honest and say that I was not expecting to spend this much on a machine when I started looking for a replacement machine. I was hesitant to hit the "Buy" button when I settled on the Janome 6300p, but now that I've had it for four months, I'm glad I did. The machine was well worth what I paid. UPDATE (3/11/13): I forgot to add that if you want to use this machine for Free Motion quilting, you have to use a bobbin holder made for this purpose. This particular bobbin holder was not included with the machine I ordered. The case is called a "blue dot" bobbin case (part number 200445007). There is actually a blue dot on the top of the case. The tension in the blue dot bobbin case is set for Free Motion Quilting. In my research, I have ‘tested’ at least 4 to 5 machines (Elna, Viking/Husqvarna, Brother…) and finally came upon the Janome MC-6300P Professional I was very pleasantly surprised by this machine. This machine was designed for professionals and does not have endless embroidery or decorative stitches. The stitch quality is exceptional and for what I do, stitch speed is very important. This machine has sewing speeds of 1,000 stitches per minute. It is heavy, sturdy and unlike so many new machines I tested, not made of plastic, but of metal. It also has a 9" x 5" throat space for working with large projects, an optional knee lifter for lifting the presser foot and a time saving, built-in thread cutter. There are a generous amount of included accessories, most of which I’ve not tried yet. This machine comes with an enormous extension table for large projects. It does not have a free arm, but I’ve learned that for my work, I don’t really need that option. This machine makes buttonholes easier than any other machine I tested and they are exceptional quality. The automatic needle threader is the easiest I’ve tested. It has a low bobbin thread indicator and programmable memory recall. Winding the bobbin is fully automatic and and actually uses a separate motor, so you don’t need to un-thread the machine in order to wind a new bobbin. There are many other features that I’ve not explored yet. Overall I think this is one of the finest machines on the market. The Janome comes with a 25 year Warranty. I made a fleece bathrobe and a small quilt It sews like a dream--all stitches are even--including the decorative ones. The fabric feeds very evenly as well. I am a novice with Free Motion Quilting and have given up on other machines--either I am getting more accustomed to FMQ--or this machine makes it easy--I even made free motion trees with branches on my quilt. The bobbin fills up in seconds--fastest I have ever seen. I left the legs off the really nice extension table that comes with it--and it fits in my SewEZi table without having to buy another insert. I used pliers and pulled the fabric guide blade off the quarter inch foot--and like it much better for piecing, as it did not sew over pins very well with the guide blade in place. The standard foot can be used as a quarter inch quide by moving the needle position to the right. Things I wish were different: you cannot change the width of the blind hem stitch--you have to move the needle position--I can live with it--but Update 2017--bought machine 4 years ago--still using. Trouble spots---when I use the auto-thread cutter, the next seam I sew creates a nest underside so I do not use the auto cutter. For some reason the zigzag stitches pucker the fabric no matter what I do. It is great for quilting though. I bought a new see through 1/4 foot and it is more accurate than the metal one. I also bought a different standard foot as I do not like the one that comes with the machine--too long with the plastic front, cannot see my stitching. I bought an all metal A foot that is shorter and more to my liking. I like this machine as it is sturdy and has the high thread guides that I think provides more even stitches whoever heard of not being able to change the width on a basic sitch? Although the bobbin fills up fast--it does not fill up the edge of the bobbin--so you have to fill it more often. The manual is very cryptic--it does not explain all of the stitches or tell you how to use the hand look quilt stitch. It does not tell you how to adjust the eveness of the bobbin winding either. It also does not tell you about the blue dot bobbin case--a bobbin case that you have to purchase separately that has a loose tension for FMQ and the Hand Look stitch . I have had to find out this stuff by googling--and looking at the Janome website. The Hand Look Quilt stitch does work pretty well once you change the bobbin case and use 50 WT thread in the bobbin and Sulky invisibile thread in the top. It is now 2015--and this machine is still doing just fine. Once you learn how to trouble shoot problems--like going over thick denim seams it is a dream. I have had no trouble at all--no repairs--but I do find that nearly all sewing machines these days come with very little instructions on how to use it My dislikes are pretty minor--this is a great solidly built machine without all the fancy stuff I rarely use and in my price range. How many decorative stitches do you really need? It is very much like an old fashioned mechanical sewing machine--with just a teensy hint of computer techno geek added. Addtional note one month later regarding bobbin winding--I discovered that you can hold your finger lightly on the bobbin winding sensor to fill it that teensy bit further; it will beep and autostop again when completely full so do not press too hard.
