My Daily Carry Just Got Significantly More Rugged (and I Love It!)
Alright, confession: I'm not exactly scaling mountains on a daily basis. The most extreme vertical challenge I face is usually trying to reach the top shelf of the pantry without knocking everything over. But when I saw these XTek Climbing O-Shaped Steel Carabiners, something in my soul (the part that secretly wishes I was an action hero) said, "Yes. You need these."My keys, previously dangling precariously from a ring that looked like it was made of recycled paperclips, were the first recipients of this glorious upgrade. Clipping them onto one of these solid steel beasts felt transformative. Suddenly, my keys weren't just keys; they were a vital piece of equipment, secured with the kind of confidence usually reserved for attaching oneself to the side of a cliff. The sheer weight and feel of it in my hand is reassuringly substantial. It's like my keys hit the gym and came back looking like tiny, metallic bodybuilders. The locking mechanism is a simple, elegant twist and gate closure. It clicks shut with a satisfying finality that says, "Yep, that's not going anywhere." I've started using these carabiners for all sorts of non-climbing related activities. Attaching my water bottle to my belt loop? Absolutely. Keeping my gym bag securely clipped to... well, anything I don't want it to mysteriously wander away from? You bet. I even used one to temporarily secure a rogue garden hose. Its versatility knows no bounds (within reason, please don't actually try to climb a mountain with just one of these and a prayer unless you are, you know, an actual climber). They look fantastic too. The black finish is sleek and understated, adding a touch of rugged sophistication to my otherwise mundane collection of pocket lint and loose change. These carabiners are probably way more heavy-duty than my lifestyle requires, but that's precisely why I like them so much. They're a little piece of over-engineered awesome that makes the simple act of attaching two things together feel incredibly secure and slightly heroic. If you appreciate solid gear and want your everyday items to feel ready for anything (even if 'anything' is just a trip to the grocery store), these are a fantastic addition. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Seem Solid, Smooth, Strong, and Suitable
For my purpose I wanted these of steel for weight and of oval shape. I'm sure that for purposes where light weight is important, the Oval Carabiner from Camp, which looks very similar, but made from strong Aluminum at about half the weight, would be preferred. The Xtek carabiner body is polished and smooth, the screw lock moves smoothly, the gate opens easily and smoothly. Note that the 'nose' of the gate on the Xtek has an interior hook, while that of the Camp is flat, so a narrow diameter cord may catch on the hook rather than slide off and out. The build of a screw-lock suggests materials which cannot be inspected in contact under force, and while I cannot feel any 'play' or friction, this doesn't mean there won't be debris, wear, or binding that can interfere with the movement of the screw lock under stress of load. My purpose is for use when trekking and backpacking, so loads will never exceed static body weight. For very long distances, I'll take the Camp, otherwise, the Xtek.

Nice heft to them
These seem to be well made and strong. We use them to hang our horses' hay nets up and although they are rated for heavier weight, the horses will put them to the test when they yank on the nets to get the hay out. We like the fact that they lock so when pulling the hay out of the nets, they don't accidentally open. Good product and worth the price.Edit on January 28, 2019I'm following up on my previous post above after a couple of months of use and some cold and frosty weather. As stated above, we use these to hang some slow feeder hay nets for our horses so they are mostly out in the weather, although we have used them in the barn on very bad weather days. Our temps have been ranging from 4 to 40 degrees with periods of freezing rain, rain and snow. Some of these carabiners have done fine but others seem to lock up, even in the barn, in these weather conditions. I am referring to the screw lock that you turn to lock the carabiner in the closed position. I have one that is rusting. Sometimes, we find that the screw lock is undone in the morning when we retrieve the nets. Horses do yank on the nets pretty hard at time, we have one that is quite forceful, but even then, I don't know how the screw lock comes undone. So far, none have come off the the eye screws we hang them from but I was expecting a bit better performance from these, even in bad weather, because of what they are used for and because they are stainless steel. I'm still happy with them, but a bit disappointed that I have to use a wrench sometimes to undo the screw lock. Maybe they are just not rated for cold temps and/or wet conditions.
