The Iliad and the Odyssey Boxed Set

I enjoyed this modern translation of both books. It spoke to me in ways that I could relate to. The footnotes also helped a great deal. The Illiad, especially, was enjoyable.

My daughter asked for these. When we received them, I was very impressed by their quality. They are beautiful and will look nice on anyone's bookshelf.

The box has a cloth bound hardback feel, the actual naked hardbacks are a smooth paper feel, and they have a glued binding.The only “flaw” I’ve found with this set is that the box is slightly wider than you would expect so the book will slid in and out quite freely. Other than that these editions are beautiful and sturdy.

The books were great, as expected.

I'm only 80 pages deep, but this translation is nicely done for a novice as myself with Illiad. The introduction really helped me as I went on into the main book. I recommend reading the introduction first. Also, the books themselves are nicely made too. Look forward to the Odyssey next!

Got it for a family as a gift and she is proud of it. The digital stuff ...they got it...but don't be surprised when they ask for paper...hard bound...books.

This review is of the 2 book Hardback boxed set of the Iliad and the Odyssey (Homer) translated by Peter Green (ISBN-13 : 978-0520306653). Reviews made before actually reading a book are usually of little value to me (and who am I to review Homer?). I guess Peter Green's translation could be reviewed but I lack sufficient depth in ancient Greek to make a meaningful contribution and others have commented on that aspect. However the physical aspects of this edition can be reviewed immediately. The set is beautiful. The slip case is sturdy and attractive repeating design elements on the book's dust jackets. The books are well bound (not glued as some hardbacks are now) and of just the right size for reading. I also like the fact that the slip case is wide enough to fit the books even with protective covers on the dust jackets. I own other editions but this is the showpiece English Homer in my library and I recommend it to be considered for yours.

Nice books and will look good on the bookshelf, but they are smaller in size than I thought they would be. Make sure you read the dimensions before you buy if you're looking for full-size books. It came well packed and no shipping issue with mine.
