Gets the job done -- excellent value
I've had this for over a year but only recently started using it. It's just what I was looking for -- a way to digitize old VHS cassettes that were deteriorating and -- face it -- nearly obsolete. There's a drop-off in video quality but the results are acceptable and certainly better than nothing. Worked right away with Windows 7 -- I didn't have to mess with drivers or anything. The copy I got came with Cyberlink Power Director 8 which is different (and I believe BETTER) than the software advertised. Cyberlink is shipping Version 10 now, so perhaps that will be bundled with newer copies of this product. I agree with Donald Anderson's review -- the software has editing features I will rarely use (mainly whiz-bang graphics and stuff). I just use Power Director to "capture" the audio/video stream and then pull that captured video into Microsoft Windows Live Movie Maker. Then I can cut out the garbage and condense the good stuff, perhaps add a title or caption, throw in some fades between shots, etc. Kinda fun. BTW -- look to Youtube for helpful videos on using both software programs. Resulting file sizes are pretty large -- but lots of choices for video format so you can make them less of a pig on the hard drive. My 10-minute videos end up being about 250 mb and are of acceptable quality.Possibly helpful hints:Get a big external hard drive to hold your videos. You'll fill up your computer's hard drive in no time at all, and external drives are pretty affordable. I use two different 2TB drives, one to hold the videos and the other for backup copies. I have many hours of video converted so far and am nowhere near filling up the drive. You can also burn to DVD but those don't hold much.Clean the heads on your VHS recorder head (easy and cheap to do -- lots of YouTube videos on it). If you're dealing with crappy old VHS tapes they're likely to dirty up the heads in a hurry and you're SOL. Some of my tapes literally had mold forming on the inside; some still played, some were hopeless and gone for good. When editing, save constantly. I find that both Power Director and Windows Live Movie Maker tend to crash frequently -- I know video editing is very processor-heavy.I need to reboot often with Power Director. When you're transferring from tape (they call it Capture)you can toggle on and off, but often around the third consecutive toggle it gives an error message and you have to start over. Frustrating -- so I've learned to do a restart before I begin a capture session. Usually works fine the first and second time. If anyone has a solution to this, please advise. There are dedicated software programs to help you organize your digital video collection but I use plain ol' Excel to catalog my clips and even launch them by adding a Hyperlink. Works great and makes everything easy to find.

Does the job well
I purchased this to convert some old VHS tapes on to computer so I could put on to DVD, Other reviewers are correct with the USB placement, don't get to spastic if it does not work right away, just try the USB in another one of your computer ports, I have an HP computer and mine finally worked when I plugged it in the back of it. The software was easy to install, I did have to update the version from the ION website but that is easy to do, just go there select products, then image conversion click the Video 2 PC one and then download it, it also has the manual and instructions as well. But that was just my experience with the cd, it may work right away for you. Once that is done, it is fairly easy to hook up it comes with the Red, White, and Yellow cable to hook up to your VCR, Note: It does have an S video cable slot as well, and I did need to purchase that extra since I could not find mine and one does not come with it, so I just went to Radio Shack and was no problem. Again, just make sure the cables are plugged in correctly, I had them plugged in to the wrong port on the VCR for like half hour until I realized it was wrong HA. I was getting signal on the computer and it was showing the DVD menu screen from the VCR and not the VHS side. Once, that was done popped in the tape and started recording and I had no problems with it. The sotfware does have some editing capabilities but honestly I did not use them, mine was just straight forward play, record, and then stop when was done. I didn't use the make copy feature that came with the software I made my DVD copies with the Windows DVD Maker and that worked great. Now you may notice on some tapes that you record there could by some problems with syncing up with the audio but I don't think this is so much a product issue as it has to do with the tape degrading some. It's not that much an issue with me since only one of the tapes I converted had this problem and that was an exercise tape that was a previous rental copy and not one I owned myself. For the money this was a great buy and it does the job well, just don't expect this to be like some full tilt Hollywood film editing booth experience or wanting it to do something that it can't do and you should enjoy this and it's ease of use like I have.

Five Stars
Worked beautifully with Windows 10. Software is quite good as well. Captures all our composite devices perfectly.

convertitore vhs in avi
perfetto e semplicissimo da usare, consegna nei tempi prestabiliti ,lo consiglio solo che in avi i file occupano parechio spazio, meglio in mpg:-)

Works as advertised
I bought this device to capture VCR home videos, before the tapes disintegrated.Firstly, to lay a ghost - it works perfectly well with Windows 7 64 bit. Ion were very helpful in confirming that to me pre-sale, and indeed the drivers installed with no problems. The kit consists of two parts - a hardware transfer device and a copy of Cyberlink Power Director for the video editing. The transfer device sits between the VCR and the PC and just works in the background. All you need is a SCART to RCA 3 wire cable connector. The RCA cable itself is included.Power Director is version 8, whereas the current version is 11, but version 8 seems perfectly full featured and I saw no reason to lay another £50+ on it to purchase the upgrade. It seems pretty powerful video editing software (this is my first time video editing so I am speaking as a newbie), but a bit of time on the manual repays the investment. Editing and then producing the videos went pretty smoothly, once I got the hang of it, although I am still experimenting to get the features I want into my final videos. You do need a reasonably powerful PC to make the most of the software (forum comments imply 2GB RAM is not enough), but it ran pretty quickly on my system, of 4GB RAM and an i5 chip.Overall, it does the job I bought it for very well and, considering the software included, it seems a very fair price.
