Q: Would a medium be more effective for a 90lb Bloodhound feeding 2x/day vs a large? I fear the large might have too much space not slowing his eating.

I bought both sizes and they are very good bowls. But they did not seem to slow my dog's eating much. So I bought a muffin baking tray (OXO brand, made in USA, from Bed Bath and Beyond) and that worked well. We just spread the food to each muffin cup and my dog has to work at getting the food, so it slows down his eating. Just something you may want to consider. Hope this helps.

My opinion, this bowl specifically (with the center tube) isn't so much interactive, as a way to slow down the eating. This bowl is recommended as the best style for a boxer. She does eat a little slower. I suggest researching what style slow feeder is recommended for your dog.

Q: What size would be closest to 45 oz?

Thank You for asking, its a good question of course. The size I call large is actually based on a 48oz dry weight bowl, but of course this type of bowl has the cut out in the middle so that takes up about 6oz of volume. The small size is based the same way on a 32oz bowl. Regards, Michael

Hi J, thank you for asking. The silicone itself is indeed a more hygienic material than rubber, in that it has much less of the microscopic crevices that are normal in rubber material and harbors long term bacterias. The concern for bowls with any base is the crevice between the base and the bowl, they will often attract bits of food and dirt, and therefore become long term bacteria hordes if not removed and washed as simply as with a run thru a heat cycle on a dishwasher, or at the least with a good bacterial dishwashing soap. I have in the past tested bowls that have a bonded base and the results of the bacteria growing in the crevice area were shocking enough that I made myself stop selling bonded base bowls, as they are simply not hygienic as most users cannot desanitize the crevice area without removing the base.
