The pickups themselves are passive at all times and never use battery power. But they are hardwired to the EQ circuitry, which is active and therefore must have battery power to function. It’s light. It plays very well although I did have to adjust the bridge somewhat to eliminate slight buzz. (Tools included) It sounds wonderful. The controls on this guitar allow you to make a very wide range of tones. Our soundman loves it and says it gives him a full rich feed to work with.
