Surprisingly somebody from America picked up and walked me through exactly what I was doing wrong. You don't get customer service like that from a product sold on desertcart very often. The keyset merely engages or disengages the exterior handle from operating the latch mechanism. When "locked," the handle moves, but does not do anything to actuate the latch. When "unlocked," the handle will operate the latch to open the door. If the panic bar is in the "dogged" position, the door is always unlocked, and the handle keyset won't make any difference, as the door cannot be locked. I hope this helps you understand how this device operates. **Q: Is this for outdoor use?** A: I am using it on an outside door. There have been no problems and no rusting. I do not know if the manufacturer intended it to be used outside. **Q: What size stile is necessary to mount this bar?** A: This exit device does not work on narrow style glass doors.
