Over time the holes will get clogged on any mesh. They also Lazer etch their logo on the holes creating a weak area; mine has cracked there as have others. I recommend paper after using metal mesh. **Q: diameter of filter?** A: I don’t have it in front of me but it is the exact same diameter as the Aeropress paper filter and the Aeropress filter housing. I'm not a coffee expert but I do like a good cup of coffee (a cup of 100% Kona coffee is perfect for me). I like the AeroPress because, unlike the coffee press or drip coffee maker I have, it uses air pressure that I control to move the water through the grounds, so in at the end I have a gap of air between the coffee grounds and the press. I feel like I have less grounds in my coffee and I have a little more control of the flavor since I control the rate the water goes through the grounds. I do use the metal filter and I haven't tried it with the paper filter so I am not sure of the difference in flavor if the paper filter is used. I must also say that I'm used to drinking a big cup of coffee and the press I got makes a smaller cup of coffee which means I have cut down the amount of coffee I drink.
