## Description

You’ve finished your book. That’s step one. Book publicist Dana Kaye now takes you through step two: getting your book into the hands of legions of readers. How we read books is changing rapidly, and so is where we buy them. From the rise of eBooks to the impact of online retail sales through companies like desertcart to the wide acceptance of self-publishing as a natural path—countless authors are writing books and then wondering what to do with them. If they decide to bring their book to market themselves, how do they ensure they will reach audiences without a marketing or publicity department and without the budgets and outreach that publishers have? If a house has acquired the rights and promises to publish, how does that writer supplement the work of those publicity managers and develop a direct relationship with everyone from the media to potential fans? Throughout her career, Dana Kaye has helped authors raise their profiles. As the head of her own independent PR firm, Kaye Publicity, Dana Kaye has succeeded in getting her client’s books into the hands of as many readers as possible. She has been a driving force behind numerous bestselling authors across all genres, from thriller authors like Gregg Hurwitz and Jamie Freveletti to children's authors like Liz Climo and Claudia Gray, and now she brings her insights to you. Kaye walks writers through all of their options, taking the anxiety out of the pitching process and teaching them how to be their own best promoters. Sharp, intuitive, and user-friendly, Dana Kaye’s guide is a must-have for all authors with bestselling aspirations. "When it comes to professionalism, hard work and dedication, Dana is the best there is! She has been invaluable in helping me build my brand, and has come up with really inventive ways to promote my books (like fun contests, which help me not only promote my books but also connect with my fans!)" — Liz Climo, Author and Illustrator of Lobster is the Best Medicine

Review: I highly recommend Your Book, Your Brand to anyone looking to promote their book and author brand - Kaye gives an honest assessment of the precarious publicity industry. She offers unique and thoughtful approaches to marketing a new book. From developing an author brand to networking and organizing events, she offers a direct, task-oriented approach. Kaye's diction makes it easy to read. Her suggestions have already proved useful to my own promotional strategy. After I read her "Branding" chapter, I purchased a domain and decided to commit to a self-hosted site. I migrated my blog content from a free wordpress.com site, and got to work on my brand strategy. Kaye offers many insights on branding and marketing. She also discusses author sites and outlines several strategies to improve readership. One of her central points is to stick to your author brand: "If you're having trouble [drafting on-brand content], start by using some of these prompts: Where does your book take place? What themes are covered in your book? ... What research did you conduct to write your book? What current events relate to the themes and topics in your book? .... Continue listing topics and types of content you could post about until you have a list of 15-20. Now, go through and highlight the topics that meet the following criteria: 1. Topic relates to your author brand 2. Topic appeals to your target audience" (37) As you can see from the excerpt above, Kaye's advice is straightforward and practical. Although her book is for authors with finished books, her advice is useful for writers in media res. For me, I read the chapters that are currently applicable to my work ("Branding," "Social Media," etc.). I will go back and read certain chapters once my book is ready to launch. I highly recommend Your Book, Your Brand to anyone looking to promote their book and author brand. (In the interest of full disclosure, I am not currently an desertcart affiliate. I purchased this book and was not asked to review this book by the author or desertcart.)
Review: Practical and realistic - I'm about to start promoting my fourth small press book, and each time I begin, I feel like I'm throwing spaghetti on a wall--I'm never sure what will stick. This book helped me figure out how to organize and prioritize my promotion efforts. Kaye covers a lot of areas such as social media (more is not always better), pitching articles, and traditional and online media. What I liked was that Kaye is realistic and honest--there are no guarantees that your book will do well, but there are ways to improve your chances to increase exposure. I particularly found her advice on book giveaways and the sample campaign useful. For anyone who wants to be active in promoting their book but is not sure where or how to begin, I recommend this book.
