I grew up with my mum's 1970's Husqvarna workhorse, which was incredibly user friendly and still runs like a dream. I wanted my own machine finally, but wouldn't be able to afford a super fancy one. At the same time I wanted quite a basic machine without too many crazy functions, because I know I will mostly be making minor repairs/alterations, and on occasion sewing myself a t-shirt or blouse or similar. So nothing too complicated. I have had this for a few weeks now and have made three blouses and seven baby dresses, as practice pieces to test out the various features and how it fares with different fabric types. I am really happy with what it can do, and how smoothly it runs. It is easy to thread, making new bobbins is no problem, and all the different stitch types look great. If I have to mention any downsides, I'd say it is a little harder to control its speed than I have been used to with other machines; it is quite fast, and trying to touch the pedal lightly is difficult without grinding to a halt. The pedal could be a little less sensitive. I read the full manual before beginning, and one thing I could have wanted was a little more advice regarding the correct stitch to use for stretchy fabrics. The manual tells you what needle to use, but not what stitch; it mentions one elastic stitch (no. 13), but this is for sewing bits of elastic together - not sewing in stretchy fabrics. Googling the problem is also a little tricky; you're told to consult your specific machine's manual, but that I had already done, to no avail. So I had to consult quite a few more experienced ladies to find out how to go about it. Still, I think this is a great machine, very user friendly and definitely good for a beginner, or someone who has been without a machine for a long time, but would like to take up sewing again. It really can do all the things you need for basic day to day sewing. It doesn't make trouble and is sturdy and reliable. And at this price, it is a real steal. Has a light over the needle so you can see what you are sewing. It has different settings for stitches, not used them yet. It did take me a few goes at getting the tension right, but comes with clear instructions and a DVD which I could not view as I don't have a DVD player but managed with the instructions. It's not heavy easy to carry, the only downside is it does not have a proper carry handle only a grip space at the back but it's not that heavy. Came very well packaged with all parts very secured and kept in place.
