I took care to use lumber that fit the holes (no PTL), and had no trouble assembling them and installing screws to tighten it down. I can see how it would be possible to break the plastic while installing the lumber; take care. The tolerances are tight so the thing isn't flimsy when you're done putting it together. If you can make a square cut in a 2x4, they'll come out nice and solid. The lower braces don't seem like they would be able to support as much weight by themselves as the top. I had no trouble with the hardware (breaking screws,etc) but this depends on the lumber you have (you might have to drill pilot holes). I regret not painting the lumber black like another reviewer did because they would look so suave. I would not recommend leaving the cross-braces unattached for easier storage - the sawhorse will stand but it will not be anywhere near as sturdy. Wobbly would be one word that springs to mind. However, they can be stacked. Review: I wanted sturdy sawhorses - now I have the sturdy sawhorses I wanted. I already have the lightweight plastic folding sawhorses, but sometimes I need a sturdier surface, and I have it now. I used pressure treated lumber that was pretty wet (from treatment, not from water). While I let the wood sit out in the sun for a day, I was anxious to proceed with my project. It took a LOT of pounding with my rubber mallet to get the wood into the brackets. It was a tight fit that sometimes seemed impossible. But this old lady kept at it and appreciates that as the wood shrinks, the horses should stay tight. Measuring the wood was more nerve-wracking than cutting with my circular saw (I never can remember how I should allow for the kerf). I was quite pleased with the quality of the included screws. They are strong and had no trouble pushing hard with my drill to insert them. It seems that when screws come with a product, they are junky and the heads spin right off. However, these were strong and have nice deep Philips style heads. I bought these I use them a lot for projects around the house, I put chair mold up they come in handy for cutting and painting. Thanks.** A: All you have to do with them is cut the 2 X4 to the length that you desire. On the back of the promotional material, it tells you the formula for making them to your desired height. But but it is easy enough to measure. The bottom of the base (which are the plastic boots the legs rest upon ) is about 1/4 thick. These are the best saw horses that I have ever used, and I have made my own. If you follow the directions, they are extremely tight and strong. 38 inches sounds pretty high. Mine are 33 inches tall, and they are pretty high. **Q: If the the middle two beams are not screwed in will the saw horse still be sturdy? (The idea is for easier storage in like a cabinet or something)** A: You can do this but I wouldn't recommend it. The saw horse will not be as sturdy. The tolerances with the plastic is such that it would be a pain to insert and remove them for storage, but it wouldn't be enough to keep them from possibly coming loose under load or vibration. If you only use them once a year for something not very heavy duty and you live in a 400 sq ft house, then sure. Otherwise, they're meant to be screwed together as a solid single unit. The kit comes with all applicable hardware, you just provide the 2x4s. If the wood wears out, simply cut new straight pieces of 2x4s and reuse the brackets. The angled feet allow the saw horse to sit flush on the ground. While these are plastic, they are decently heavy duty and seem like they will hold up. My only complaint here would be the price. As of this writing, amazon has this for over $30 dollars. Are they worth this much? I think a fair price would be something around $15 dollars. I'll admit they are easy to use, however building a saw horse is not that complicated. A quick search on youtube will provide you with some excellent simple steps to accomplish the same thing even without cutting angles. If you want something that is as easy as could be, quick, uses a minimal amount of wood, and sturdy these fit the bill. Given that they are re-usable, this does help justify the cost, but it seems pricey for a couple hunks of plastic.
