There are 3 dates to worry about when dealing with military rations. Manufacture date, inspection date, and expiration date. Manufacture date: Self-explanatory. Though, considering that the general population is clueless, I better elaborate. This is the date the ration was manufactured and packed. Inspection date: Rations are slated to be inspected in detail 2 years after they are manufactured. Or, if the rations were inspected previously, the inspection date will be 2 years after the previous inspection date. Expiration date: This will require some explaining. The DoD says that is a ration is not inspected by its inspection date, it is to be considered expired and discarded. This is merely the DoD standard. The reality is that military rations can last anywhere from 5 to 10 years after the date of manufacture, depending on storage conditions. So a ration manufactured in 2020, will still be somewhat edible in 2030, however some of the contents may be spoiled and unfit to eat. Can’t avoid that. Hope this helps! I received Menu #4 With the BBQ Chicken and Lemon Pepper Tuna, but my tuna was substituted with a chicken filled bread which i was ok with, needless to say its an MRE, not home cooked food so my expectations were not high but i was rather pleased with the quality of food inside. All my items tasted good and had no bad smells or after tastes. My favorite item personally was the Toasted Corn Kernels. 8/10 would definitely recommend if you are interested in simply trying out a real deal MRE or are looking for a good self contained ration to bring on a trip.
