The Four Pages of the Sermon Paperback – May 1, 1999

One of the things that I wanted most out of my preaching class in bible college and in seminary was help in the area of a method of sermon preparation that I could utilize with any text of scripture, fit my style and personality of preaching and could be utilized regardless of how much or how little time I had to prepare. The Four Pages of the Sermon helps to do just that and it was a added bonus that my professor Dr. Parsley was well versed and highly suggested this method.This is a must read if for anyone who wants to develop their craft in preaching.

I have never given a sermon in 20+ years of serving as a deacon. We are reading this as part of a continuing ed class taught by a local pastor. We have to write and present a sermon to complete the class, and our homework, in addition to reading 3 chapters/week, is to listen to sermons given in any service we attend to learn to spot the various elements. We just completed the first 9 chapters, and I feel like I have just been given the key for decoding the sermons I hear as well as clear instruction in how to write my first one that I will have to present in class! I don't know if I will ever have the courage to actually stand before a congregation and give a sermon, but I am a lot less intimidated by that idea than I was when I signed up for a class in homiletics!

Excellent sermon preparation methodology. However the book seemed to lack editing, as there were typos and inconsistent and confusing headings and grouping of topics. The first edition was much better organized.

I gave this five stars for the message and clarity of the book. Of all my sermon studies, this is one that made the most sense to me. I think both traditional preachers and contemporary preachers can benefit from this sermon writing method. My only complaint is that the writing is kind of like a typical pastor, long winded and takes his sweet time getting to the point. If you wanted to, you could skim the books rather easily and still get a good idea of his method.

Required reading for a course I'm taking and by the end I appreciated it's message.

This is one of the better "how to" write a sermon books available. It lays out a simple format that ensures that the sermon covers the trouble in the text, the trouble in the world and how the Gospel addresses that trouble in the text and the world. It is much easier said than done. The format provided by the book is simple, not simplistic, accomplishing the goal is often not so simple. We often preach demands, what people ought to do, this book pushes us to add in what God has done and is continuing to do in the world.Good stuff

This book clearly outlines how to preach the law in the text and in our world, as well as the gospel in the text and in our world. We live in a world that needs to hear the gospel or good news that God is present in our lives and with us even when it seems that we are alone. Many preachers do a good job telling about the trouble or the law in the text and our world, but leave out the gospel or good news. Wilson's easy to read style can help even the most experienced or newest preacher find the good news to proclaim to the world.

The book is brilliant, not as much for its therory on homiletics (the is good, basic, simple and clearminded introduction on the subject), but what makes this book brilliant is all the samples from published sermons, that it is so rich on. That is what makes this book so special.As a european minister with 15 yrs of experience I find this book as one of the best introductions to american homiletics, I have read so far - and mainly because of all the samples. Recommended!
