Fascinating juvenile historical fiction
Though this is a juvenile book, and I am in my 60th decade, I wanted to read this since it is about one of my direct ancestors. I found it quite interesting. Though it is definitely historical FICTION, it was fun to fantasize about "what if it happened something like this?" I appreciate the summary at the end that was given to separate known fact from speculation. Now I just want to read more about lives of these people....Robert the Bruce, his daughter Marjory, his queen, etc.

Girl in a Cage
When Marjorie's father is crowned King of Scotland, the English King, Edward Longshanks, embarks on a crusade to wipe out the "rebels." Captured, Longshanks has Marjorie placed in a wooden cage, and hung in the center of town. Pelted with rotten vegetables, exposed to the cold, wind and rain, Marjorie is determined to remain a princess.Based on historical events, I found this to be a fascinating book. It was well written, engaging, and the characters seemed alive. I think that pre-teens will be fascinated by this story, and perhaps find an interest in history. Overall, highly recommended.

Scotland in Perspective
Girl in a Cage by Jane Yolen and Robert Harris is a well-rounded story, mixing courage and triumph with a battle of wits between the powerful King of England, Edward "Longshanks," and the imprisoned princess of Scotland. It takes place in 1306 and pulls in a lot of historical facts though it is a fictional account of what might have happened. I really liked this book because it really pulls you into history and makes you think about that time and care more about the people of Scotland in that time period. (Reveiw is a 12-year-old's perspective).

Boring!
This book is on my homeschool curriculum book list. We couldn't get through it. My kids (2nd and 5th grades) thought it was slow and boring. They weren't even interested in skipping ahead to see what the outcome is.
