Fantastic book!
This is a REALLY great book for so many reasons. I loved the many qualities and learning points. It is so very unusual for the typical books of today. It promotes acceptance of others no matter the differences (including skin color), values mathematics and uses a lot of math in the story (so unique!), entrepreneurship for children, money management, creativity and inventiveness, respect for adults/authority, etc. etc.— I used this book when I taught a home economics class for children —involving things other than cooking and cleaning — like personal value (you’re perfect just the way you’re made), time management, money management, appearance, hygiene, host and hostessing, etc. This book fit so many of the topics. I read a chapter or two at the end of every class. The kids Loved it!! I came across it searching for a good book for my class online. Couldn’t find it in our local libraries and had to order it. I hoped it would be good... and it was perfect! It Needs to be in the libraries! Great find.

I loved this book and so did my kids
As others have covered the plot synopsis, I will not repeat it.I am 40 years old, and read this book as a child. I had completely forgotten about it, but all of a sudden the fond recollection of it popped into my head recently. As my own chldren are now 11, 9 and 7 years old I thought it would be worth checking out again. All of my children loved it. My 11 year old read it on his own in about two days, and then my 9 year old and I took turns reading it aloud. While all the reviewers have mentioned the positive message about race relations, another positive message to me was the idea that even children can really accomplish something besides just sitting in school all day. Most of the adventure books we read involve wizards or fairies or talking animals, and while these are tons of fun they never give kids the sense that these stories relate directly to the lives they are leading. While the idea of kids opening up a factory and driving big companies out of business is of course a bit unrealistic, the fact is that kids really can go into "business" in smaller ways. My daughter (the 7 year old) is already organizing a yard sale of her baby stuff for when the weather warms up.I highly recommend this book.

recommend for upper elementary
I have two grand daughters who are 8 and 9. I like to order and read the books they are doing as a mass school reading. I was a school librarian 20 years ago, so most books now are new to me. This book is a great learning lesson in ingenuity and some math reasoning. It's creative. Kids should enjoy. May encourage parents to help develop their children's' ideas. I mailed my copy to grand kids to keep in their home library, classroom, or school library.

The best life-changing business book money can buy.
I first read this book when I was about 8 years old. I had no idea the impact it would have on my career. What better story about a young entrepreneur who defies the odds, finds and creates a product, figures out how to sell it on a subscription basis and sets the competition reeling to try and grasp their market share back. As a kid, I was the one coming up with all the business ideas, from selling painted faux-gold rocks to starting a daily pickup recycling program (before it was cool.) I am now a successful business owner in my late 20s, and I still come back to this book from time to time to gain inspiration before launching a new product line or diving in to take a new business risk.Give this book to your kids, and read it again as a seasoned adult. Take it with a grain of salt and learn from the basics of business.

not the usual kid stuff
Portrays a bright kid who isn't altogether a smartass. My grandson thought it was very good.

Encourages Entrepreneurial Spirit in Youth
This was a fun book to read with my 5th grade class. We even replicated the toothpaste recipe and brainstormed our own ideas for inventions, then followed up researching inventors. Those ideas sparked creative writing stories and artwork to support them. One of the main characters (kid inventor, Rufus) is also African American so this is also ideal for use during Black History Month as well.

Inspiring!
Review from my 12-year -old:The Toothpaste Millionaire:Summary: Sixth-grader Rufus Mayflower wants to save on toothpaste. Betting he could make a gallon of toothpaste for the same price as one tube of toothpaste, he starts making toothpaste. With a few plans, by the time he was in eighth grade, he didn’t make a gallon of toothpaste- he made a million! The book was quite good. It had a decent plot, with different characters to twist the plot here and there. The book is written from the perspective of Kate, Rufus’s best friend, which gave me a different perspective altogether, rather than 3rd person perspective. The pace of the book was quite engaging, though it was not too rushed. It was also quite inspiring to see Rufus not giving up on toothpaste when he thought it was costly, but making some on his own. It kind of shows the quality of determination.I would recommend this book for young readers, like readers, who can read 100 -pages- of chapter books.Overall, I enjoyed reading this book.

Inspiring
I bought this for my little cousins, so they can get inspired by it. I think it`s important for children to develop their entrepreneurial mind at a young age. This book is about a young kid starting his own toothpaste company, an inspiring story.

Perfect Inspiration for Maths Class
Excellent story as a classroom read aloud with loads of possibilities for mathematical conversation. Inspiring for future entrepreneurs as well as introducing ideas in economics such as stocks, investment and taxes. Looking forward to using it to work with my 5th graders
