The Andromeda Strain

Last saw this movie many years ago, and it is still one of the greats.

Robert Wise is a great director. Because he knows how to surround himself with competent and intelligent people. This is the reason why this film is so successful in its realistic presentation of a major biological crisis.Of course there is the Michael Chrichton novel that first fascinated Wise. Indeed, here is a story where we will not solve the problem with guns or big punches in the face. No, here, you have to think and learn to work in a group, even if sensitivities are sometimes opposed (no solitary hero).Even the army understands that their fate is linked to the research that scientists are doing to eradicate the unknown organism which risks killing all life on earth.And for a 1971 film, it still holds up very well in terms of the scientific data illustrated in this production.Too bad the Universal blu-ray doesn't offer extras galore. But at least there are several languages ​​offered on the disc. A way to allow as many people as possible to appreciate this intelligent disaster movie at its true value.

I found this a very enjoyable movie that follows the broad outline of Crichton's story without, as so often happens, simply borrowing the title and concocting a new storyline for the sake of doing so. I feel that this movie is far preferable to other portrayals of the story under the same name. The acting is good- and the story is easy to follow.

Good value

I’ve seen this film countless times, a typical rainy bank holiday Monday flick of my childhood. Although, that is probably more a reflection on the era!Based on the book of the same name by Michael Crichton. The film follows a now predicable story of disease outbreak and rush to stop its spread however, this movie opened up the genre for others such as Contagion. Despite being filmed in the late 60’s the film has stood the test of time, if you can forgive the dated technology!

"Andromeda Strain" is one of my favorite movies because it stands the test of time. Although made in the early 1970's, the technology shown,including the computers still looks up-to-date, with the main difference being that today, the graphical displays of the data would be much more colorful. However, the techniques used to analyze the "Andromeda" organism would be the same . Of course, much of the suspense of the movie is created by a stuck sliver of paper, and that would not occur today, but 99% of what is shown (including the threat to mankind for terrestrial biological warfare or extra-terrestrial organisms) is still very relevant. In fact, the society in which the film takes place is more "future-oriented" than our current one because reference is made to the Lunar Receiving Laboratory in Houston which processed the samples returned from the Moon by the Apollo astronauts, and which has since been idled by the loss of the spirit of exploration in our current society, so the makers of the film were able to do more futuristic thinking and make a story and laboratory that looks contemporary even decades later. Finally, the actors, led by Arthur Hill (one of my favorites) are all "cool, intellectual" types, and although there are differences of opinion between them, they all submerge their egos to get their vital work done. It is sad that films of this type are not made any more.

A classic of its genre, but it’s a long time since I’ve watched this. At that time of its release (1971) the theme was terrifying if one thought about it. However, watching it 52yrs after release, with the special effects of the day, for me it’s very cheesy.

A good Hard Science Fiction story directed by Robert Wise.

この映画は、約50年前日曜洋画劇場で観た作品で翌日中学校で話題になった作品で買った作品がまさかコロナウイルスでこの作品は、予言だったのか？と思わされた映画でした。コロナ抜きでも興味深い映画と思います。

A fantastic reproduction to BluRay of the original pandemic movie.To appreciate it you’ll need to be comfortable with a somewhat flawed future aesthetic and more than a few improbabilities, but it’s great watching.
