Doomsday Preppers Season 1

Agree with preppers or not, this was a good watch for me
Prepping seems to be coming out of the shadows, at least as far as mass media is concerned and NatGeo has gotten in on the act. I'm a "prepper" too, if you consider someone who's had to go without during an emergency and will never do so again a "prepper". That said, there's a few things I's like to adress with season 1.The format is fairly standard for a "reality documentary". It does go with the more extreme folks rather than the more common folks who are just putting some things aside for rougher times. But that's OK, in most of the cases. I found many of the people to be pretty ingenious in how they've approached what they perceive to be The End Of The World As We Know It. Maybe they're right, maybe they're wrong. A few might even be slightly over the top (well, there are a few that I think put a step ladder on the top and went from there...) But they have what they consider to be valid reasons for doing what they're doing, so who am I to argue?I found lots of little TTPs (tactics, tips, and practices) that I could apply to my own situation. In that regard, season 1 was worth it hands down.I also found that I absolutely detest the rating system that Practical Preppers apply at the end of every segment. Not because they may or may not be right about aspects of that individual's preparedness, but becuase they fit that rating into a "box". Many preppers have to think outside the box, due to circumstances, finances, whatever, but the rating system seems to ignore that. In a few cases, even I found it insulting. I know they carried it over into season 2, but I'm hoping that if there is a season 3 that either gets changed or dropped entirely.

Great Show, Coming from a Skeptic
Watching this series again in 2019 (8 years after the show premiered), it still is a fascinating watch. Do I believe in prepping and the imminent end-of-days? No, no I do not. But the fact is that this is a TV show with (though I recognize these are real people) fascinating characters, ideas, philosophies, and tactics that can be implemented in day-to-day life. As someone who is skeptical about the end-of-days and prepping as a whole, the show is still well-worth watching, even if you believe in none of it. I find the experience similar to watching shows/movies about other nations and cultures throughout the world, seeing how someone with a different mindset views the information and world around them. However the only arbitrary aspect of the show is the "Expert Assessment" at the end of the episodes. The "experts" bring up a lot of good points for each prepper (a need to purchase tools of defense, communication, food, water supply, etc), but the pointless graphical effect of a 0-100 bar is never explained nor easily understood, and it really just disrupts the flow of the show overall. In addition, once "The Odds" segment plays after every prepper, the show rarely lists its sources when discussing what is-and-isn't likely to occur, instead just having the narration cite "leading experts" with no way to fact-check the real likelihood of any of these scenarios potentially come-to-pass. With that said, it's only a minor issue with the show and the rest of the show is still enjoyable if you ignore these 3 minutes of each episode.Am I a prepper? No. Do I believe in the infamous End-of-Days? No. Is this still a great show to watch? Absolutely.

When the SHTF, Point the Fan the Other Direction...
Me and the ole lady enjoy the series and there are some good ideas in there to consider and apply - and thank goodness it's not corrupted with needless, stupid drama and childish theatrics. The REASONS some of these people give are interesting in that, with a little bit of honest research, more than one of the fearful motivations would be seen as unnecessary. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to stack, pack, & prep - no need to pull tin-foil out and invent stuff. Polar shift? Nah. Not worth worrying over - but there will come an economic reckoning with the USA being more than 20 Trillion in the hole. The best prep motivation is a simple desire for independence and self-reliance. That in and of itself covers most bases and puts an emphasis on a healthy lifestyle rather than hiding away thanks to a terrorizing imagination.

Seriously, folks...
Too much extraneous drama for my taste. No thanks. Although some ideas were very, very clever and some ideas ingenious, the ridiculous drama aspect... Obviously some of these people were not in the military and but like to play soldiers and have the money for accessories, gear, and even the cool carrying case! The whining and crying of the rich cowboy whose ears were damaged due to the lack of firearms training and precautions with proper hearing cover--absurd. This was the episode which ended it for me. No thanks. The person teaching self defense? Erm... in theory, great. But who honestly believes an out-of shape person is going to be able to defend against a well-trained, fit and armed attacker? Or two? Some of these people need to get their reality checked.

Really good show
The show does get a bit repetitive, it covers some survivalism and preparedness, but becomes good tv watching if you are happy watching some people prepare for some disasters and seem to forget they are missing life at the minute in trying to prepare for the end of the world.Wife describes this as "only in America". Maybe she is right, worth watching but remember its only a tv show!
