Wonderful telling of a very unusual case
I had read about this case in a older true crime book that was written not long after the crime occurred. There are some very unusual aspects to the people involved, especially the murderer and I wondered if the movie could do justice to the story. The acting and the pacing, the story itself, are all very well done and the amazing twists and revelations from the true story and that were in the book, were all included in this film. I was worried they might not be able to portray it properly but I was very satisfied with this dramatization.

Based on true events
Based on true events and the acting was understated but credible for the most part. No wonder it earned awards. Wished the film gave more background and especially aftermath details. It was so engaging, I researched a bit after to learn more. The tragedy reached far beyond what is shown. ... would explain but don’t want to spoil the movie.

Love this movie!
This movie is REALLY good! Barbara Hershey and Lee Garlington are 2 super actresses and do such a great job in the roles they portray in this film. What makes this movie so disturbing is that the events unfold so normal, average and realistic, but then, all of a sudden, it gets so out of control. Something that has to be seen to be believed and, as if that isn’t enough, apparently it’s based on a true story! Great movie and a must-see!

Brian one of my favorites!!!!
I have loved Brian Dennehy since I had seen him in a segment of CAGNEY AND LACEY many years ago. I had taped the program A KILLING IN A SMALL TOWN and reallyneeded to update the video with a DVD, since the tape was starting to deteriorate. Barbara Hershey was terrific, it is a shame that she hadn't performed in other TV made movies. But Brian rules! Buy this movie!

Scary
Very true to the original book. It had to leave out some of the back story. I suggest reading the book first then seeing this movie.

Brilliant
This is a made-for-TV film which could have acquitted itself well on a general cinema release, it's so incredibly good.Basically it's the (fact-based) story of how a conventional-seeming Mom from small-town Texas suddenly commits an horrific murder for no apparent reason. Brian Dennehy plays the lawyer hired to defend her, and the woman herself is played by Barbara Hershey in a career-best performance. The story unfolds in three main locations - the psychoanalyst's couch, where a psychiatrist (played by Hal Holbrook) uses regression hypnosis to tease out the reasons for the woman's actions; the police station, where the various protagonists give their version of events and, of course, the court room, where the trial and its revelations bring out the whole story. The acting from everyone involved is faultless, with not a duff note anywhere. Hal Holbrook plays wonderfully against type as the therapist convinced of the woman's innocence despite the facts of her terrible actions (he normally specialises in playing oleaginous, sweaty sleazeballs, like the crooked scientist in "Capricorn One"). Brian Dennehy is perfect, as usual, playing the small-town contracts lawyer out of his depth in a murder case. But towering above everybody is Barbara Hershey, scarcely recognisable as the dowdy homebody who moves seamlessly through the evolutions of Mom, Other Woman, and tormented and repressed housewife, who finally explodes into a screaming banshee when finally pushed an inch too far in the court-room climax.I don't normally rate Barbara Hershey; I feel that she usually relies too heavily on her physical beauty to carry her through whatever parts she plays, so that I've never credited her with much talent. Here, however, she covers herself with glory, blowing everyone else off the screen (including Brian Dennehy, which takes some doing) and really convincing you that she IS the person she is playing. My God, Barbara, so you really CAN act. More, woman, more...
