Good photo-essay book however doesn't cover many areas of Armenian Highland that are significant
Being a scholar and an Armenian Ottoman history researcher, I found this photographical journey and essay book by Matthew Karanian quite interesting, especially with the inclusion of stories on some of the historic and ancient churches and sites of Armenian civilisation and culture and history in modern eastern Anatolia of present Republic of Turkey.. My critique of the book is mostly positive, however I was a bit disappointed that the book did not cover many other important Armenian sites in the old provinces of Vaspouragan and Darone-Turuberan and Van, and in the province of Erzurum (Garine) and Erzincan ( Yerzinga ), for instance the old monastery of Sourp Garabed in Moush and the Sourp Grigor church in old Tseronque village NE of Moush, the ruins of Aygestan in old city of Van, the ancient Armenian churches in and around Erzroum (Erzurum) and Tortoum (Tortum).. Ani and Kars were covered well, except the inclusion of more historical accounts of the churches, ruins and sites photographed would have helped foreign readers grasp the significance of these sites better. At any rate, the book is definitely worth buying for it is a unique attempt for the first time in re-introducing the memorable footprints of the once-thriving Armenian civilisation and culture in Anatolia ( central and eastern modern Turkey ) prior to 1920, in high-quality colour photographs and good printing on quality paper of the book..

Inspiration to travel to historic Armenia
More than a guidebook, Matthew Karanianโs Historic Armenia after 100 years serves as an important documentary record of the survival of Armenian material culture in historic Armenia. His stunning photographs depict what remains of the once numerous churches, monasteries, homes and other structures as well as the beauty of the landscape. Adding to these contemporary photographs are historic images showing what the structures looked like in earlier times and unique maps showing the previous Armenian names of localities. Most moving for me are Karanianโs photographs and conversations with Armenians such as Asiya of Chunkush and other descendants of genocide survivors still living in these lands. By using this book, travelers can now more easily locate, visit and understand the history of this region.

The perfect gift
I bought this book for my father and my in-laws. They raved about it with such enthusiasm that I recently purchased a copy of my own. It is wonderful to not only see pictures of my grandfathers' villages, but to read about their interesting histories. I strongly recommend this book - it makes a wonderful, unique gift!

A Must Purchase for All Armenians
An incredible touching, moving tribute to the lands where my grandmother escaped certain death. I highly recommend this book to all Armenians as a reminder of where we came from and how fortunate, we as second or third generations decedents, are able to build up on our ancestors sacrifices.
