Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane (The Underland Chronicles, Book 2)

Great read even for adults
The adventures in this series are from the perspective of 11 year old Gregor, but it is a well written story that even adults can enjoy.I do not recommend reading at work if you are a reactive reader like myself because I sobbed while reading this, I talked out the Prophecy, trying to figure out what it could mean, and I laughed.I would rate this book a 10/10 somehow even better than the first.

Definatly not just for kids
I really never saw myself reading books for ages "9 and up," but a friend recommended the series and I became hooked. The first book had me hesitant, I'm not usually a big fan of child narrators, but Collins proved me wrong. The other problem I usually have with younger age books is that they are too simplistic. Once again, Collins proves me wrong. The writing is simplistic enough to be believable for a 12yr old's point of view, but the plot itself is unpredictable and full of really good twists and keeps you thinking. The action pieces are also something I did not expect, as I thought they would be downplayed for a younger age. Instead, they are well written and demonstrate the brutalities of battle (even if the ones fighting are not human) and although not the most gruesome scenes I've read (I read horror genre too). I was surprised that the level of brutality was recommended for ages as young as nine, but as an older reader I found it refreshing to not have fights and battles sugar coated. The characters are engaging and the whole Underland world is complete and intriguing with the many 'peoples' that live there and the differences all the groups have. I cannot recommend how a reader of say age nine would like this series, but I can say that as a 22yr old, if you don't mind reading something a 'the lower level,' I defiantly recommend it for many ages over 9.

Excellent
I'm probably five times older than the target audience for this series, but I'm enjoying it immensely. The protagonist is well drawn as a child who is precocious, not intellectually but socially. That's a switch. The other characters are well drawn, too. Human or not, you get a decent sense of who or what they are. Their actions are not arbitrary. The plotting is well done, too. There's enough action, danger, and suspense to satisfy. This is no fluffy fantasy. People are sick, they get hurt, and they die. At the same time, it shouldn't be too much for a tween to handle. They can follow the protagonist as he learns to deal with adults and adult problems such as loss and betrayal.

Even better than the first
The second installment of Collins's Chronicles is a fast-paced, action-packed, suspense-filled thriller. Collins skillfully keeps her readers turning the pages. Readers follow Gregor and Boots' return to the Underland, where they meet old characters and new. As Collins successfully leads readers to a suspension of their disbelief, she creates characters and situations that become natural and memorable. This is such a pleasure to read that it should be shared with audiences young and old. I look forward to discovering what Collins has in store for us in the third book of the series.

Surprisingly great
I started reading this series after finding it on the kindle lending library.. I borrowed the first book and started reading it, but it was so great I eneded up buying the remaining 4 books, because I couldn't wait for a whole month to borrow more! This series has surprised me. After reading the hunger games, I was somewhat annoyed by the author's predictability and writing style, despite loving the stories she was telling (at least parts of it). But this series was a wonderful surprise, because it's so original, simple, and addictive! I couldn't put down the books. I stayed up so many late nights while reading this series, it's a wonder I got anything done!

Destined to become a classic
I thought the same thing about the first one: this book deserves to be recognized as one of the finest books of children's fiction in recent years. I don't generally pick up books in hardback, but after reading Gregor the Overlander, the first in the series, I had to get this. Like its predecessor, it deals with a fantastic voyage in a mysterious land with very high stakes. Gregor's adventures may bring him face to face with giant talking cockroaches and rats, but they're very serious novels nevertheless. Gregor has to grapple not only with external dangers, but with internal as well--deciding what kind of person he desires to be. Moving adventures with a lot of heart, they're worthy additions to the bookshelf of any child--or adult.
