Not on Your Nellie: Season 1

I think it's supposed to be funny because the lead actress misuses words. But she does it so much it's a turn-off. So I turned it off. It could have been good I think.

Having caught this show totally by accident on Youtube, all i needed to see was a few scenes of this short-lived show to convince me to buy it here, on Amazon.What is actually more than the first season, it includes season 2, but not the 4 episodes from season 3, which was abandoned after lead character Hylda Baker had injured herself while filming the first episode of season 3.The show was originally supposed to be a spin-off of a previous show that starred Baker (Nearest And Dearest), but changed a few things here and there in the procss to bring certain aspects of the new show a bit of freshness. It never did catch on for some reason, as I find Baker's occasional 'ticks' with the English language funny, but what one would call this show almost like 'Cheers' in a way. As owner of a pub, Baker encounters different personalities that drop by, some are endearing, some are a little annoying, but adds to the charm of this show nonetheless.I rated this show highly for 2 reasons. First, for having this available on Region 1, so those in the USA can enjoy a good classic britcom. Second, for making me laugh, think, and enjoy a good show that didn't rely on raunchy humor.

The jokes got old very quickly. Save yo dough.

MORE DUMB THAN FUNNY. A WASTE OF MONEY AND TIME

Not on your Nellie is truly one of the old TV shows. The sort I watched years ago. It is sort of funny for its time period. The cloths are something to see. For the price it is fun to watch.

This was an amusing show but after watching several episodes while still amusing it waspredictable. Good for a fill in to just relax

Waste of money

Nellie is just great. She is funny and fiesty. I love the pub regulars, unexpected humor. This is a must have for your Brit Com collection.

I laughed so much at this I've pulled a muscle in my chest. Hylda Baker is just so funny, her dialogue is peppered with malapropisms which she delivers with deadpan perfection. When she's looking after her friend Gilbert during his bout of depression, she says he's staying with her because he needs smothering...that was when I pulled a muscle. It also surprised me (in a good way) with its portrayal of the gay couple, George and Gilbert. Bearing in mind this is 1974, the attitude is quite progressive as they're just treated as any other couple, and close friends of Nellie's. There's some mild leg-pulling, but it's just friendly banter and no different to how any other characters are treated. I found this quite endearing and it all adds to the warmth of the series. Most episodes end with a sing-song round the piano, and as Hylda Baker sings there's a real sense of the rest of the cast relishing the performance of this great music hall star. The whole thing's just wonderful. So sad that it ended abruptly mid-way through series three, when Baker was injured. They tried to continue with Jack Douglas taking the lead role but without Hylda Baker the magic had gone. She was a very talented, very funny lady.

Good too see old northern slang and jokes again when they were allowed to be themselves. Nothing nasty ever said. But all got to the point. Hylda baker at her best. Same o lines but funny every time. Worth buying if you watched when on tv old black and white sets. As colour expensive to buy back then a good years wage back in the early 70s. Good old british fun. Buy if you enjoy the old jokes and fun .

I am a great fan of Hilda Baker and was not put off by the poor reviews I saw. I should have been; I watched the first four episodes hoping it would get better but it didn't. It was badly written, cliched and tried to fit every one of her classic sayings into every episode.I was sadly, very disappointed. I considered giving it one star but gave it two because it featured Hilda.

Looked forward to seeing this series again.The 1st and 2nd DVDs are great and very funny but the 4th DVD was such poor quality at times the picture disappeared and most of the rest of the time it was like watching the show through a snow storm,really spoiled the fun.

We love it, it is very funny, old fashioned comedy.
