Garbo at some way short of her best and a rather weak narrative
I'm used to Garbo's charisma redeeming weak narratives. Alas, her charisma is rather less evident than normal in this film. The love triangle is not great. Garbo's character is in an unlikely and unpromising marriage to a wealthy , but much older, man. There seems to be little affection between the married couple. A handsome, but superficially despicable, man attempts either to win the Garbo character's affections or to force himself upon her.I shan't plot spoil, but there is an obvious denouement , which does not actually take place. The actual outcome differs significantly from what is set up for the audience. This surprise ending, though, does not lift my 3* assessment.

A Silent on the Verge of Sound
This 1929 silent film is almost a "talkie" with its synchronized sound and fitting music, making it an interesting viewing experience, whether you are used to silent films or only 'talkies'. The sound effects are things like a cheering crowd, slamming doors and hand clapping, and the music is quite varied, according to the mood and scenes, such as Javanese natives performing their tribal dances (though it's not authentic Javanese music; only a Hollywood version of 'something exotic'!)This aspect alone makes this silent film worth experiencing, but add to that the excellent performances by the principle players: Greta Garbo, the wife who longs for more romance and attention from her husband; Lewis Stone, the 'blind' husband who only has his business on his mind; and Nils Asther as the enigmatic Javanese prince who tries to seduce the neglected and frustrated wife.Greta Garbo goes through many emotions, all of which she plays wonderfully, and each of the characters is solid and realistic. The story is, in fact, just like Erich von Stroheim's "Blind Husbands", only more detailed and sophisticated, and in a more exotic setting. Even if the storyline is familiar or somewhat simple, the actual telling of the story, the acting performances and visual -and audio! - experiences make up for it very nicely.

Greta Garbo is Beautiful and Excellent
In this little-known film of her late silent career, Garbo is onscreen with Nils Asther. It features a synchronized soundtrack (and even a scene filmed with sound, but which doesn't contain Garbo). The storyline has been recapped elsewhere, so I'll just say that if you're a Garbo fan, this is a must-see.As a reminder, this is a feature in the Archive Collection from Warner Bros., so it is a transfer from their vault and while in good condition, it is not restored in any way.

One for the Fans
This is one for the fans. If you're a Garbo Fan as I am you'll like it but if you're not a fan you'll find it's not one of her best vehicles. The plot is a little hackneyed and we find Garbo torn between two men neither of whom are worth the worry. Surely the world's most alluring woman ( 1928 ) could've found a third option.
