The broth is where the calories are cut
The soup tastes great, and once it is heated, it tastes better than you might think it is going to when you first open the can. If you are used to the yellow-tinged (chicken fat) broth from the regular style, then then almost clear, watery-looking broth at the top of the Light version might alarm you. It tastes fine, and the calorie savings are pretty amazing. We have also used the broth from Progresso chicken soup to dull the appetite of one of our rescue cats who has an eating disorder; she seems to think she is still as starving as when she was rescued as a feral with a litter of babies, and a couple tablespoons of broth will often quiet her yowls as she stands at her food dish. The Light broth works the same as the regular broth with the cat IF it has been heated. After heating, some of the chicken fat that had settled to the bottom of the can or stuck to noodles and pieces of meat and carrots is then mixed back into the broth. A finicky fur child might be the best judge of taste.

Really tasty and totally vegetarian
This soup has been a favorite of mine for a while, because it is completely vegetarian and has a slightly (but not overpowering) zesty flavor. Unfortunately, it is difficult to locate in our local stores, so I have to buy it from Amazon, and the price is considerably higher than it used to be when I could find it on the shelves in a local store. It is fairly thin and not creamy, so I usually supplement it with a small 8 ounce can of Del Monte mixed vegetables (minus the packing water); this makes two very hearty bowls of vegetable soup. The soup is a bit pricey when you buy from Amazon, but worth it for the taste. It does contain yeast extract, so I don't know if that qualifies as vegan, but that would be the only issue. It also purports to have some genetically engineered vegetables in the ingredients.

yhey keep sending bashed cans
In the past i always received bashed cans. This order sent nice cans at last, hurrah. But this batch of “savory vegetable barley” was so peppery we had to put other brands of soup into it to get the pain out. Also contained fewer vegetables than in the past. We suggest adding sweetener, a can of mixed vegetables and topping with grated parmesan. Why they would ruin a good product is beyond me.Previous review:They send mostly bashed cans though this is the best canned vegetable soup. No noodles, no onions, no potatoes! Delicious though a bit high in sodium. Please stop sending bashed cans.

Just call it potato soup-it's nothing like clam chowder!
I was dismayed at this. It tastes ONLY like potatoes and water and not much else. I purchase a salt your own from the Vermont Country Store that everyone I've given it to has loved. It's sort of like comparing a good canned pea soup to Habitant. It's no contest. As a bit of fun, we tried a blind taste testing, and this was by far rated the worst. The palate does not lie. Why so much sodium if there are no other flavours for it to fall back on? Salt should be omitted from all canned or instant soups as it seems what appears to be an easy out for actually adding something to tingle our taste buds. If nature doesn't do it on her own (maybe she really DOES know best), they why do we? This offering needs a serious rethink.

Delicious Low Calorie New England Classic
I am editing a previous review that I have to admit was negative about this great soup. The first time I had this I really wasn't impressed but because I wanted more protein in my meal I added a can of clams which I didn't properly drain. It was watery and barely edible. Yesterday I decided that I had the cans yet to use so I opened a can just to get rid of it and after dumping the soup into the sausepan I could see that the consistency was wonderfully creamy with lots of potatoes and enough clams to be able to call it clam chowder. I apologize to anyone who read my first review and chose not to purchase this wonderful soup. I had a serving of this soup for lunch today. I am on a 1200 (plus or minue) calories a day and I have made a commitment to stay this course for a year. So far it has been 201 days and my weight loss of 40 pounds (for a 75 year old woman) is pretty good. This delicious soup will help make the next 164 days easier. Thank you Progresso!

Good Choice for a Light Soup
Progresso's "Light" Soups have been a hit or miss with me and this is one of the hits. Good seasoning gives alot of the flavor to the soup as a stand-alone meal. If you are like me and sometimes want more, I recommend maybe adding a can of drained kidney beans to complement the other beans and a fourth of a cup of shredded cheddar to it as well. It's cheesieness turns the broth into an even more flavorful taste. If this is not enough chicken for you then add a small can of packed chicken or pouch. I also like to add a small wedge of chopped up cabbage and heat it all on low for about 40 minutes on stove (I don't know what would be a best time for you in the microwave sense they are all different). I like to try and mix things up when I eat a soup to prevent it from becoming boring or just to try a little variety or discover a "new taste"... This is one of those soups that you can keep it as it is or experiment with additional flavors added. I will order this flavor again. Good job with this flavor from Progresso. Calorie stats are low enough and if you watch what you are adding, the stats will remain good and low.

mostly water!
Though this soup is light, it is still very tasty but made up mostly of water. I do not feel at all full after eating(drinking) the whole can which is supposedly for 2. I must admit that the salt content is not significantly lower than the high salt Campbells' Chicken Corn Chowder but the later is full of chicken and corn and some potato pieces that really fill me up. Of course there are less calories and fat but if one has to eat twice as much to feel full, doesn't that defeat the purpose of a light soup? I will probably not be buying this soup again any time soon but it is really quite tasty and if you mostly like the liquid of soups then this one is for you.
