As someone that wants to embed more SEL competencies into my teaching practice, I always have a hard time imagining giving up a lot of instructional time for SEL. As a high school math teacher, I have a packed curriculum and a quick pacing guide. What I enjoyed the most about SEL Every Day is that it provides helpful ways to embed SEL into teaching practices that many teachers already use (e.g., collaborative learning).I learned that, at least at the secondary level, we can teach SEL competencies through instruction. We don't have to lose anything. In fact, as the book shows, these competencies are foundational for student success. But it's important to name what we're doing and be intentional when asking students to focus on certain components.

Good resource for quick SEL lessons
This is a great book for a teacher who wants to add SEL into a core class without taking up a ton of time or resources. The author provides quick and easy ways to add SEL everyday. They are effective and useful but I have found SEL to be most effective if the teacher practices SEL in their own life and models for students how to do so. So the book is helpful but it’s more helpful if the teacher practices what’s in the book as well.

Not a book of strategies
I want to incorporate SEL into my classroom practices more, especially this year as I've noticed increased rates of emotional and mental struggles during covid and remote learning. Though the premise was good, this is not a practical book about incorporating SEL into the classroom. Rather it seemed like a book about why SEL is important. The few practical things mentioned are practices that I already have in my classroom.
