Great Entertainment!!! Highly suspenseful and great storytelling
Hoag brings terror to a small town where "things like this just don't happen around here." This is my first Hoag novel and I must say that I was highly entertained. Her characters are written very well and you get a since of what make each of them tick. The characters are complex but not to the point of not being believable. As they interact with one another you become suspicious of everyone and the story keeps you guessing right up until the end. This small town is being terrorized by a serial killer that is snatching woman, torturing and killing them. Set in 1985, law enforcement is losing the battle against a keen mind that is not making mistakes as he leaves his victims out for display. Since it is the mid 80's DNA evidence is not a technology that they may utilize so they must investigate everyone No man is not under suspension and no woman is safe until the murderer is stopped. As two bullies chase two other children after school one day, they go running down the hill and run into a scene of brutality that will shape and change each one of their lives forever. This is just the latest victim to be discovered and unfortunately for the police the killer leaves no clues on his identity. The story follows the lives of these four children and there families, Anne Navarre who is there teacher and the law enforcement agents looking for the perpetrator.Tami Hoag has written a great murder mystery that mixes suspense with a little romance sneaked in and is an excellent novel for any reader. I couldn't put this novel down and I highly recommend it to all.Grade: A+

Hunt for a killer.
Deeper than the Dead was an enjoyable read. It was a mystery with many twists and turns, and an exciting ending. The plot and characters were well developed. All and all it was a fine novel.I only have one criticism. The characters were too unrealistic. Naturally enough, novels should create relationships and situations interesting enough to draw in the reader. However, if a novel is set in a realistic setting, it should contain MOSTLY realistic people and saturations. To be interesting, a novel must add out of the ordinary people and situations. But like adding spice to a dish, it can be over done. And I am afraid that is the case with Deeper than the Dead.Looking at the central characters, one of the four children is insane, one of the four Police Officers is insane, all three of the male suspects cheat on their wives, and of the three wives one is abused and one insane. This is not a world anyone would recognize. It crosses the line betweenthe unusual and the absurd.Again. Deeper than the Dead is well written. But it could, and should have been better.

1st of 3 in a series. So far we'll worth it.
This is the 1st book in the 3 part Oak Knoll Series. (I just happened to pick it without knowing that). There will be no spoilers here. Just one great FBI thriller. When I read this I felt like some of the less important parts were left hanging, with no closure to parts of the book that the author specifically made a big deal of working up. So I was surprised that those things were just left as stragglers. That's when I went to her ad-specific AUTHOR page and saw that this was #1 in the series. But in all honesty, someone can read this as a stand-alone novel and enjoy it tremendously. Tami develops her characters along the way that at one point you're suspecting one and at another point another. Some of her writing is deep and shocking while at other times it's sensual and sexual. She's all over the map and gives you a bit of everything and with clear concise writing. Tami Hoag has been one of my favorite writers for many years. For the past year or so I haven't had the pleasure of reading one of her books. I've been in a book club following their suggestions. But now that I've been reintroduced to Tami I’ll be reading her on my own. Truthfully she's non-putdownable.

Great start to a mini series
Many years ago I read Night Sins and Guilty as Sin and enjoyed them. Every now and then I randomly buy one of Tami Hoag's books when I find one on sale at Barnes & Nobles, Hamilton Books (my favorite bookseller), or some other place.Recently started reading 'Secrets to the Grave' and quickly realized it was the second book in a mini series. Put it aside to look for and buy the first book and discovered there is a third one. I love it when this happens. So I bought both and started 'Deepen than the Dead'.This was a great book, a compelling read. I really thought it was so good. A wonderful cast of characters. Only one I didn't care for was the FBI guy, Vince Leone. Maybe with luck she will kill him off before the series ends.

Great Who Done It!
Deeper Than the Dead by Tami Hoag is one of those tantalizing mysteries where you keep changing your mind about who is the most normal appearing character that could actually be the serial killer. What is really profound is the author's excellent treatment of all the normal people, with their normal children, in their normal little town. It becomes glaring apparent right in the beginning that there really is no normal when it comes to people.I enjoyed the honest portrayal of the kids and how they coped with the world they perceived and the world their parents tried to present to them. I also really enjoyed the heroine's devoted and wacky sidekick, Franny. The author managed to illustrate with her characterizations a quick study of profiling, without really stereotyping any of them. This story twists between grizzly, scary, heartwarming and heartbreaking and is very hard to put down, once started. An excellent read, but not for the squeamish.

The black demon
C'est vraiment un suspense du début à la fin. L'auteur nous dirige vers plusieurs scénarios explosifs pour terminer le suspense à la toute fin.

Excellent Read
I really enjoyed this book. I only bought it as the second book in the series was on offer on Kindle and I like to read books in order. Having never read a Tami Hoag I didn't know quite what to expect, but I loved that it was set in the 1980s and the way that it was written made me feel that this was more than a regular crime novel. I recommended it to our book club as I thought it gave a lot if insights into the characters and made me think.
