Affordable, distortion-free, sharp, and compact, but prone to chromatic aberrations.
This lens is a very good lens for both the Leica M mount cameras and full frame mirrorless cameras (Sony alpha 7 series). The level of distortion is remarkably low for a super-wide lens. The sharpness is generally decent, but on certain digital sensors (Sony a7r, for instance) the corners of the images may be slightly "smeared out" due to coma. The main weakness of this lens are strong lateral chromatic aberrations that manifest in green-magenta fringes around areas of high contrast near the edges. There is also strong vignetting.Unlike versions I and II, though, there is no colour shifting, as this lens has been optimized for digital sensors. Like other Voigtlaender lenses, the super wide Heliar has excellent metal construction. As it has little or no distortion, it is particularly suitable for architectural photography. The only comparable for Leica M mount are the $4600 Zeiss Distagon ZM 15mm f/2.8 lens and maybe the $2800 Leica Super Elmar M 18mm f/2.8 (which is much less wide). For Sony mirrorless cameras, there is the $1200 Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f/4 lens, or you could adapt the $300 Rokinon/Samyang 14mm f/2.8 lens (bulky and having difficult-to-correct "mustache"-style distortion), the $2000 Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L, or the $2,500 Zeiss Distagon 15mm f/2.8 ZE or ZF. If you care about distortion and don't need the f/2.8 aperture or zoom capability, the Voigtlaender is much more compact, very significantly cheaper, and nearly as sharp.

What an awesome lens!
This lens is great. The aperture dial clicks smoothly, but firmly. The tactile feel of the dial is perfect. The image quality is better than the previous versions. Vignetting is still present, but is way less pronounced compared to previous versions, and disappears around f/8. Being a f/4.5 aperture, I was not expecting great results handheld in low light without high ISO, but I knew that going in. I shoot landscapes with a tripod, and this is great. I am using it on a Sony a7ii with a metabones adapter, and I am extremely satisfied with the results. The complete setup is a compact package with great image quality. So far, I love it. Aesthetically, this lens is second to none. It looks great! Pick it up, you won't be disappointed!

Great lens!
Perfect for our recent trip in Iceland. From waterfalls to the Northern lights, this lens performed exceptionally well. Highly Recommended. (m mount version used on Sony A7 and Leica M240 bodies)

Works well with the Sony A7R-II!
Got this lens in Leica M mount to primarily use on a Sony A7R-II camera via an adapter. The folks at Lens Rentals did an extensive comparison of wide angle lenses that work well with the Sony sensor, and this was one that did work well and was one of the few recommended. Great, especially for the price I paid new on Amazon.

Great little lens. Solidly built and smooth to operate. Using it on a Sony A7Rii with VM-E Close Focus Adapter and so far the results are super!

Five Stars
Nice little lens. Sharp but vignettes a bit but that's easy to fix in postproduction.
