Villains Aplenty
The latest Spider-Man Epic slots neatly between the already released Venom and Cosmic Adventures Epics, and collects the rest of, indeed the bulk of, the David Micheline/Todd McFarlane run on the title. Rather than spectacular milestone moments, this particular stretch of issues is more of a general reaffirmation of Spider-Man's regular style of adventures. We're briefly embroiled in a couple of events here - Inferno was going on, so we have a mild demonic background to the few issues that tie in (although nothing that dramatically impacts Spidey himself), and we also get another chunk of Atlantis Attacks in the webslinger's 1989 annual. The focus here, though, is more on pitting Peter against a succession of his familiar rogue's gallery. In rapid order we have battle with Mysterio, the Lizard, Hobgoblin, the Scorpion and more - a chance for McFarlane to portray some of the greats, as well as the first rematch against popular new villain Venom.I've never been the greatest fan of McFarlane's art - I find his faces weird and his sense of perspective regularly sloppy - but there's no denying he brought a new energy to the book, and he obviously takes great glee on being able to create some classic battle here. Michelinie was definitely improving during this period, making sure that all the superheroic bombast was constantly anchored in human subplots like Peter and MJ getting evicted and the growing relationship between Aunt May and her tenant Nathan. The title story, a six-parter that features Silver Sable, Captain America and Solo as well as a couple of surprise supervillains, is solid but not amazing, but the volume ends on a high with the Parallel Lives graphic novel. Retelling the story of Spider-Man from both Peter and Mary-Jane's perspective is both a loving celebration of past stories and a deeper exploration of MJ's character in particular, and it has some gorgeous Alex Saviuk art to boot.Extras include three Marvel Fanfare pinups, a two-page Marvel Age article on Parallel Lives, Amazing Heroes and Marvel: 1989 - A Year in Review covers by McFarlane, and the cover art to the Spider-Man vs. Venom trade, X-Men: Inferno Crossovers hardcover, Spider-Man Legends: Todd McFarlane trade, and the Birth of Venom and Assassin Nation trades. Another great collection for Marvel's flagship hero, and a great way to have these adventures on your shelf.
