A very intriguing and thoughtful book and thesis. A lot to take in so I'm reading is slowly over time, but that's my usual approach and not an indication of the quality or content of the book.

The Narrative Art of Self-Making
This is a gem that has quickly become one of my favorite Jerome Bruner books, a brief yet succulently satisfying account of how we use stories to make sense of our lives. As a narrative therapist, I find it affirming of many of the understandings of human social processes that have become invaluable in my work, particularly the notion that through narrative we sort of make ourselves up as we go along. As Bruner observes, "we constantly construct and reconstruct our selves to meet the needs of the situations we encounter," doing so "with the guidance of our memories of the past and our hopes...for the future." To me, our ability to make stories about ourselves (creating a "selfhood" along the way) is both invigorating and inspiring, as is this elegant little book that studies, honors and celebrates such a capacity. Well done Mr. Bruner!

This book is a lifelong companion
The lowly starred review seems odd because it even does praise the book, I think, as being deadly. It says that passages of the book do not break new ground; however, some passages really do.The passages on self-making and culture are solid summaries of the leading ideas over at least a hundred years. (Remember, this book is short; one can find 500 page books on narratology.)The groundbreaking opinion of Bruner is that narrative pleading is at the heart of psychology. Being a parent and a pet owner, I can understand what Bruner is saying. So, yes, there are more boring books about narrative and the role stories play in our lives, and there are some simplistic explanations, but Bruner's concise and pointed book is a real gem that many people can benefit from.I love this book.
