What a wonderful gift
The National Trust has given us a great gift with their well-trained and well-educated docents throughout the NT properties, and none has captured my imagination more that Mrs Crocombe and her YouTube videos demonstrating not only Victorian recipes (for both the titled and their servants), but also sliding in historical background information and the reasons why things were done just so. I was thrilled to find that the NT was putting out a book - and what a book! The inclusion of some of the real Mrs Crocombe's personal writings is astonishing, and the recipes are as easy to follow as when they're playing out on YouTube. Such a delight!

Amazing and entertaining!
I love this book! It has helped me to learn a lot about the history of cooking and baking. I haven't tried any recipes yet, but they are very accessible. I appreciate that the measurements are given in US and UK standard measures. The recipes are modernized from the originals to include complete instructions. It also has a transcript of Mrs Crocombe's (the actual Victorian chef's) recipes in the back! I read the book through more like a novel than a cookbook since it was so engaging! The book brought me to the English Heritage videos online, not the other way around!

Authentic Victorian Recipes
I have a lot of cookbooks, but I am always on the lookout for cookbooks that have old recipes that you don't find any more. This cookbook has plenty of authentic recipes that have been tested and tried and tasted from the late 19th century. I've made a few, and they have all turned out exactly as explained. But this is more than just a cookbook. It's really a history of cooking in an English manor house of the period. It is based on a real recipe book by Mrs. Crocombe, and actual Victorian cook. So, even if you don't make the recipes, you really learn a lot about life downstairs.

21rst Century American Loves Victorian English Cooking
The book is gorgeous and gives lots of information on the dishes, the time period, the location, the servants, and at the back of the book are not included recipes because they were gross haha. I loooove the recipes for the chocolate bounding and the Christmas pudding. The almond pudding is good too.

Bellissimo libro scritto in Inglese .
