Just the Facts: The Emergence of Modern America uses fascinating historical footage to explore six decades that shaped modern America. The series examines the Gilded Age in the late 19th century, the Progressive Era of the early 20th century, the Roaring Twenties, and the Great Depression. W ith the crash of the stock market on October 29, 1929, America s economic expansion and prosperity came to an abrupt end, and citizens faced extraordinary hardships that persisted throughout the era that President Hoover named the Depression. This program examines the many factors that led to the Depression, Hoover s attempts to counter the nation s economic woes, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt s New Deal programs. The video also discusses the election of 1932, which put Franklin Delano Roosevelt in office by a landslide, and examines the relief, recovery, and reform measures initiated during the New Deal.

Mostly propaganda
With the bad economic times we are in, (and maybe headed towards worse), I wanted to better understand the Great Depression and also to show this to my grandchildren. After watching this, I would say it was about 20% historical fact, and 80% propagandized cheerleading for FDR. You may have a different take on this, but I would suggest not wasting your money like I did.

The Great Depression
This dvd is loaded with information about a rough time in American History. FDR is seen as the hero as he institutes different programs to get Americans back to work. His helping individual Americans is seen as successful, whereas President Hoover's attempt to help Americans by starting at the top to stimulate businesses, is not. FDR used the media - specifically radio - with his "fireside chats" to connect with Americans. This dvd discusses the start of the Social Security Administration, the FDIC, labor unions, and what some labeled FDR's "alphabet soup". It ultimately says the end of the depression was our entrance into World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the war production booms. The one thing I had issues with is that the chapter breaks aren't necessarily in synch with the subjects - some are in the middle of subjects. This dvd is appropriate for middle and high schoolers.
