It’s a plastic plate with a ball attached.

Added a GPS to Dash of side by side. Heating system on dash had mounting point for GPS. It fit perfectly.

While it is made well, strong construction, the ball is not rubberized and therefor nothing you mount on it will hold up. I even tried cutting up a rubber glove to fit on it, and it still falls.EDIT: Cut off two fingertips off a black mechanic rubber glove putting one over the other and that worked. Am keeping it as I can live with it.

I needed this to mount my Garmin to my kayak. With this item, I also purchased the RAM Track Ball with T-Bolt Attachment and the RAM Composite Double Socket Arm all from Amazon.It was a perfect setup for my needs.The pre-drilled holes on this base adapter aline perfectly with the hole in the Garmin base making it an easy and fast setup. The screws that came with my Garmin mount were self-tapping so I did have to make a trip to the hardware store to get three stainless steel bolts with stainless locking nuts to attach the Garmin base to this base adapter.Looks great and everything is secure.This base adapter is lightweight so I don't recommend using it for heavy items. The Garmin Striker 4 weighs around 8 oz so this works fine.When adding gear and gear management accessories to my kayak, I'm always looking to keep my overall weight low.

Could not tell from the picture but when I received it I found out the base was not flat. Aside from that it still works well.
