World Trade Center ... and ... Oliver Stone?
When I first heard that Oliver Stone was the director of another "too soon" World Trade Center movie, I thought, "Oh no!" Started doubting if I even really wanted to see it.Not that it is too soon. Clearly, judging from the current state of American politics, it isn't. Maybe "overdue" is more like it. How soon so many of us do forget. I think Americans - maybe the World - in this day & age NEED a reminder. Sad, but true. We seem to forget so very easily. Just go on with our lives. All the while, the enemy is focused. So, forget the "too soon" angle. That was not a concern for me.But, Oliver Stone???? Hey, no doubt, the man knows how to make a movie. Clearly, he is a great filmmaker. That wasn't a concern, either. I was very worried about the angle ... Americans are the bad guys, the Bush Administration imploded the buildings, there are NO terrorists. So, during the drive to Asheville yesterday, that's what I addressed to my 3 eldest daughters who accompanied me to the theater. Inside, I was feeling like perhaps we should have stayed home.Man was I mistaken. I will not offer a review here. Just see it!It was not at all what I expected. Forget the angles, even the film making was way different than I anticipated. I anticipated epic shots of buildings crumbling; vast panoramas depicting planes in flight; masses of people fleeing in terror. You know, recreations of all we had seen on the news - live in many cases - on that dreadful day 5 years ago. A HUGE movie. It wasn't. It was small. The only "big" pictures were on televisions in the background being watched by family members & co-workers. The movie tells small stories within the big one. You only experience what the characters were able to experience.Small does not mean not powerful. And the angles were of love ... of honor ... of heroism.Wimp that I am, I cried throughout the ENTIRE movie. No exaggeration! My eyes were pools of tears for however long that movie ran. Tears trickled down my cheeks at regular intervals. It was all I could do to keep from breaking down bawling at points. There was not a sound in the theater, except for sniffles. Those were my countrymen; that is my homeland; I grew up on those streets ... I kept thinking that, over and over. I don't know what any one else was feeling or thinking, but I'd wager it wasn't much different. In the end, I was certain of one thing ... Oliver Stone gets it. Kudus to him. A masterpiece!NEVER Forget, friends!

The Truth told the right way.
Great actors to pull off the sense of New York culture at this time in our nation's history. It doesn't get any better than this. Reality finds a home in the life of a people who refuse to be overcome by evil.

5 Stars / Familair themes in an intense true drama
I would rate this 95% accurate (according to thecommentary) dramatization of the rescue of two PAPDpolice officers with 5 stars. This movie never boredme and told a story that I personally was not familiarwith.A number of people - probably none who will read this -have said it is "too soon" or "too depressing" to tellthis story. While I understand those emotions, on viewingthis film, I see it as a straightforward telling of reallife events against two popular themes in movies. The first is the theme of the importance of family, love, teamwork, duty, faith, comradely, and people helping otherpeople because it is the right thing to do. This may soundcorny but I do not mean it to.The second is the theme of battling to rescue fallen comradesagainst real danger and time constraints. This theme iscertainly one seen before in many war movies. And in my mind, this movie (along with "United 93") is a war movie, differentonly in that we are not used to thinking of civilians onthe main land United Stated being targets of war. Many other classic war films depict battles in which the humantoll exceeded that of 9/11. (I am not trying to minimize 9/11,but just to put this film in the context of other war films.)That said, this film is emotionally intense (the commentarytracks even more so), so people who feel they would be upsetby this probably should stay away.

A real tear jerker
Based on a true story. It's uncomfortable to watch this film and be reminded of the unforgettable tragedy of 9/11. But it's well done, and it focuses on the good people who responded. As we see in the end credits, nearly 3,000 people died, over 300 of whom were firefighters, cops, and Port Authority employees. Sadly, only 20 people were pulled out alive. You would think an Oliver Stone movie about 9/11 would be over-the-top conspiracy stuff like _JFK_ and _Nixon_.But this is a film that focuses on people and their families and guarantees tears. Maybe it's overly sentimental, but didn't we all cry when 9/11 happened?Nicholas Cage and Michael Pena turn in great performances as two Port Authority cops who are trying to help evacuate the North Tower. When the building collapses, they are buried in the rubble. Michael Shannon is also excellent as a U.S. Marine who feels a calling to help in the rescue efforts and discovers the two cops.I was a newspaper editor in 2001, and I personally knew and interviewed two of the heroic New York firemen who spent the most hours at ground zero, trying to dig out survivors. But most of the people they dug out were dead.. Both of these young men eventually became disabled with lung disease, and I'm not sure if they're still alive today.Even though I went through a few tissues watching this film, my ultimate reaction was anger toward the heartless terrorists who did this. A Wisconsin police officer in the film who volunteers to help with the recovery calls them "bastards." That says it all.

It was good
It was rather good, I will say the most powerful and heartbreaking line from this movie is "Thousands of people in here, where the hell are they". This was a devastating blow to our people and the country as a whole. My heart still breaks when I see movies and shows about it. And yes I still have a mental image of the moment I found out about it. I was lucky enough not to have lost anyone as I was still in High school and Everyone i knew then was either in the midwest with me or out west in California.

A good snapshot into the experiences of two firemen.
I wasn't too sure what to expect from this movie. I guess a part of me was expecting some sort of documentary-styled story of what happened that particular day. It was quite exciting leading into the tragic events - but that was it. The movie focused on a very claustrophobic perspective from two characters trapped under tons of rubble. There was some flash backs and scenes of what their family members were experiencing. This was still an interesting movie - a snap shot into two lives on that fateful day - but not nearly the level drama I anticipated. Would I recommend this movie? Sure - if you're looking for a person-based story on the events of 9/11. I guess it was too soon to make a full documentary-style film of the tragic events; given its release date. The blu ray came quite quick and safely - and it works (playable) - so no issues there.
