IRWINTools Record Passive Lock Bar Clamp, 24-inch (223224)

These are my favorite "go-to" clamps when doing narrow glue-ups. They provide tremendous pressure and are way easier to adjust on the fly than c-clamps or even bar clamps. If you need clamps that you can adjust quickly, these are the right choice.HOWEVER...I've discovered that if you try to use them with the handle in a vertical up position, it takes a bit of coordination to get the lower (now upper) jaw to lock - it just slides as you turn the handle. It's not a problem in off-vertical or with handle down position, only with handle up. Seems to me that this would be a problem with anyone's clamp of this design. The solution, of course is to pre-tension the clamp (I usually use a small piece of foam between the jaw and the wood) or flop the pieces being glued on their side temporarily.

These are great, professional quality, heavy-duty clamps. They are well-made, deep throated clamps. They are not cheap, but they'll probably last a lifetime.

Pros; lots of metal in frame. Looks very sturdy. The fine threads for the clamp handle while allowing a higher force for the same torque are probably not a good idea in the long run. Especially bad if you ever want to use these near a welder... Fine threads will strip sooner than coarser threads. The diameter if the screw seemed small to me compared to the massive frame. HOWEVER THE BIGGEST PROBLEM- I bought two clamps. One worked well. The other did NOT.The 2nd clamp's screw thread was cocked at a craze angle to the main frame. This would tend to twist the frame and also bend the screw threaded rod. Who ever had tapped the frame threads was not aligned with the frame when he made the threads. I sent back the cocked one and got another which was acceptably threaded. So 2/3 were ok. If they were all good then I would give this clamp 4 stars. And as others have noted, they are half the price of comparable sized Bessey clamps and probably 1/2 the quality.

This clamp works very well however its not the strongest around. Good for light/medium duty clamping

I have always been impressed with Irwin products. This did not disappoint. It is a clamp and it works. Very heavy duty and the micro groove system makes setting starting sizes easy.

These clamps are much heavier than Bessey! Not as refined ! I’ll put these next to my Bessey clamps and I’ll only use them when I run out of the gold standard Bessey clamps. But they are priced right is why I ordered a pair, but watch shipping and handling charges! If I had to do it over again I’d pay the extra and get the best, Bessey! Correction, I used them today on a project requiring many clamps. I was impressed so I ordered 3 more because there was no shipping and handling charge, only sales tax. CAN’T beat the price!
