A great read
Prior to this book I read understanding justice by Barbara Hudson. I would definitely recommend that if you want to read this book read Hudson first because this book can get confusing if you don't have any background reading or knowledge in socialist views of punishment. Garland is a great writer and his arguments are a really interesting read. I would highly recommend along with Understanding Justice by Barbara Hudson. The book arrived immediately with no hassle. Always a good sign :)

A good textbook on the subject matter
Garland aims at surveying the most decisive social theories about punishment, and 'the book is thus an argument for (italics) the social approach to punishment as well as an exposition of it.' (p. 1)As a consequence, Garland goes through Durkheim's, Rusche's, Kircheimer's, Marx-inspired, and Foucault's theories among others with providing deep analyses of their argumentation, and no less deep criticism of their reasoning, to further the discussion.Interesting read to know about the different theories and move on with further questions to investigate.
