This is a strongly made device with a substantial comfortable cushion.The lifting is done by a gas-filled strut, a smaller version of the things that hold up car tailgates. It stores the energy generated when your weight pushes the top cushion down and releases it smoothly when you move to stand up. When considering buying it is worth measuring your chair first to make sure the arms are far enough apart all the way up. The instructions discourage using it on wheelchairs, but it fits mine and works perfectly.
