Green Hornet [1974] [DVD]

Please note,this is a review of the recent Spanish release of the complete Green Hornet TV series from 1966.. This series has been unavailable on dvd for ever. i'd only seen the duo in the batman crossover but always wanted to see the series proper so when I saw this Spanish release I parted with my hard earned £30.00 hoping for the best but fearing that the series would not live up to my expectations. well, I've only watched the first two discs so far but I am totally hooked. it's not just Bruce Lee., though he is great,and as the episodes progress his character, Kato, seems to be given more and more time in the limelight. (particularily evident in the episode "the praying mantis"), but Van Williams is also really good. And the theme music is totally mad (I think Quentin Tarantino must have been a fan). To be really honest the first few episodes are a bit stilted ; but then the series gets going and goes from strength to strength. I'd advise anyone with an interest in 60's TV , Bruce Lee, or early superhero TV to get hold of a copy of this Spanish release before it disappears. It's very easy to set up the English speaking mode without subtitles, the picture is pretty darn good for a 50 year old series, and who knows when, if ever a British release will happen. Oh, and if you've seen the film version with Seth Rogen, don't worry, this is miles and miles and miles better than that! (mind you, staring at a brick wall for an hour and a half would be better than that film!). I have to go now; disc 3 is in the DVD player, and Van and Bruce won't wait forever!

If you've never seen the original series like me (because I'm just that young). then this "movie" is perfect.It's 3 episodes back to back and has some good extras.They could have called it The Best Of: The Green Hornet.

series compilation

Very much a 60 s TV show. This show lasted only one season. The half hour action format was starting to draw to a close by the mid 60s. That and low ratings spelled doom for the show.The set here is of compilations from the show. The Green Hornet and the Fury of the Dragon are fun and just right for the superhero fan. The Late Bruce Lee brought to this show the style that he would later use in his more famous Hong Kong action flicks.Both adventures run 90 minutes just about and are fun to see for an old fan of the show.The leads are now both gone and this style show will never be done again. Entertaining and fun viewing.

beautiful bruce lee little dragon film

I was really hoping this set would be worth the high price tag but sadly it wasn't.Wasn't expecting perfect looking transfers, maybe VHS quality at worst. The transfers look truly awful, (look at my screen shots). Looks like some sort of filter has been applied to them making them look waxy, as a result there is next to no detail. I understand these shows are old and we aren't going to get HD quality transfers but these are very poor. It is a shame as the transfers don't seem bad in terms of actual print damage, it just seems that some sort of filter has been used to remove noise and as a result this has ruined the transfers.I would not recommend this set, particularly at this price.

[Update at end] Note that this review is for the sourcing and availability of this item for the Buce Lee fan, and not specifically a review of the artistic merits of the serial The Green Hornet television show. Another review was quite negative about the offering and the distributor. Overall, I was satisfied with my experience with the distributor of this item (also considering they are the only source). The other review stated the product was received in a sub-standard packaging (specifically the DVD case). I find the case was as structurally sound as any other DVD/Blu-ray case that I have received by shipment. The other review stated the discs were substandard and one disc was defective. All the discs in the product I received were of good quality, they appeared to be commercially produced media (not DVD-R media). The other reviewer was specifically upset that a "promised" documentary was not available on any of the discs with the product they received. It is nice to be provided "extras", but the case label that came with my product did not promise any extras such as a show documentary. I am satisfied that I received the product as offered.Now for the Bruce Lee fan: This program / television show is the only serial and first acting job for Bruce Lee in Hollywood. His character is a supporting role, but prominent nonetheless and it is the real Bruce lee. His martial arts skills are on display in some of the episodes, which is the desire to collect of all his fans. For this alone I recommend it to this audience. The product contains the original english titling and credits, and has an english soundtrack along with the spanish sound track. The only downside is the episodes are in PAL format, so a region-free DVD player is required. The North American (Region 1/A) players will not playback PAL video (even that which is region free), even though digital TVs will receive and play the PAL format. I hope this review is helpful to the hardcore Bruce Lee fan. The disc set ships from Madrid and will take up to 30 days to arrive. Go enjoy!UPDATE: In the first paragraph I noted a negative review of the full series set. It turns out there are two offers of the full episodes set, one from Spain and from Taiwan. Bought as a present for my husband. Reviews in the U.S. are mixed as to quality of the DVDs. For these not being remastered, they hold up well. No complaints on these. So happy I was able to get these for him!
