Si Lewen's Parade: An Artist's Odyssey

It's magnificent, if you can handle a spiritual stare into the heart of human darkness. It even seems to transcend human evil, into something larger, something deeper, something more eternal. It's one of the most amazing things I have ever seen. If you want something like that, I suggest buying it.

I learned of this book in a radio interview with Art Spiegelman, and bought it sight unseen as a gift for someone who's an artist and a history buff. We examined it together and were enthralled with it. The images are overwhelmingly powerful. We could not believe that we hadn't heard of Si Lewen before.We were also impressed by the ingenious physical construction of the book, which met Lewen's criterion of wanting his images to be displayed right next to each other.PARADE is of great artistic and historical significance and I recommend it highly.

Poignant collection that documents modern horror of war

Powerful glimpse of the horrors of war through witnessing eyes.

The book is a beautiful and stylistic celebration of Lewen's work. Spiegelman's thoughtful foreward provides great context and history.

It's ok.

A fascinating early "graphic novel" -- really, a series of dozens of etchings that tell a powerful story of Nazi oppression that feels painfully relevant today. The book is uniquely formatted -- it's an accordion, with no spine and all of the pages attached to each other to form something you can flip through like a book or unfold like a 20-foot-long map. Read the volume one way and you get Lewen's paintings and their story. Read it from the other side and you get a long interview with Lewen and an essay about his work and his often tragic life. A must-read.
