Showgirls (1995) [Blu-ray]

Assumed this would just be a soft porn movie, thanks to years of ridicule from 'professional' reviewers.Which only goes to show how many professional reviewers behave in a herd-like way.Was amazed - not least because they seem to have missed the point that this is a movie with a strong feminist message, yet remains gripping from start to finish. 'Proper' cinema in other words.Feminist? - yeah, did the reviewers not notice that the men in the movie are depicted as several rungs below women on the smarts ladder? And that Elizabeth Berkley - in her great performance - is tougher than every male she is stood next to? As is Gina Gershon.Yeah, there is a lot of t*ts and as* and also front bottom, for those who have a major need to see that - and good luck to them I say, it's got a way better plot than most porn movies.I know when nudity is part of the plot, and when it is just inserted for cheap thrills (looking at you, James Ivory) - but this movie is set in the Las Vegas showgirl world. Whaddya want? - uniforms?But can it be that the original reviewers were so foolish as to base their whole estimation of the movie on the fact that there was a lot of nudity, and then miss out on all the other aspects of the movie?Could it possibly be that they saw the rape scene as titillation, and not a damning indictment of Hollywood-style sexual (and racial) abuse?It appears so. And the new reviewers, who say it is worth reassessing due to its 'camp' value, haven't 'got it' either.This movie is about a damaged but ultimately strong young woman succeeding in a world outwardly controlled by men. It is a gloriously entertaining movie that delivers that feminist message whilst still remaining watchable from start to finish. In itself an achievement.Those reviewers should start practising their 'we are not worthy' moves , and Paul Verhoeven should receive a dam* apology from each and every one starting now.

The video disc was easy to play and set up. The content was okay and the performances were quite good if a little strained at first. The story was a little over-the-top but it grew on me. I didn't like the moral of the story: namely that anything goes in the fight to get ahead. This didn't seem to matter too much because the main character was almost living on the breadline. However the point was made that we all need friends if we want to survive and at the end of the story justice was served, even if it was a bit rough! The bad guys in the movie did deserve some far from gentle treatment, in my opinion. Some of the secondary characters were a bit sleazy but let's not forget that Las Vegas, where the action took place, is a city known by some as the 'City Of Sin'! The dancing in this film was executed very well but the choreography could have been more tasteful. A good point was implied in the movie that just because someone works in the adult entertainment industry it doesn't automatically make them bad or nasty people.

Very few comedies have the guts to just play it straight, and let the audience realise where the jokes are. But when you do it right, the payoff is immense.Showgirls is one of those comedies. To this day marketed as a serious drama, for those of us that know the truth, Showgirls finds Elizabeth Berkley of Saved By The Bell establishing herself as a gifted comedienne.The show is nearly stolen from her Nomi character, though, by virtually every member of the colourful supporting cast.The storyline is irrelevant to the hilarity that ensues, but is basically a classic tale of getting everything you want and then not liking it when you get it.Over the film's admittedly overlong two hours, the cast unleash a huge array of hilarious one-liners, nonsensical dialogue and absolutely baffling over-reactions to the plot developments; all, as previously mentioned, treated completely seriously to only make it funnier.Most of these lines feature substantial profanity so it's hard to give an indication of just how funny the film is here, but the running gags are fantastic, involving many topics that were previously off-limits for a mainstream comedy like menstruation and ejaculation.The show stealer here is Robert Davi as Al, the owner of the strip club where Nomi works before her success. Literally every single line he has in the film is side-splitting, although Glen Plummer is almost as funny as the scumbag choreographer James Smith.I recommend to anyone with anything approaching a sense of humour to see Showgirls - the black comedy to end all black comedies.

This movie is great because it taps into something real, in a way that no other movie has. It leaves an energised feeling, like something is alive inside.The acting is hard to understand in the first 25 minutes of the film, it seems gauche and melodramatic, later on we hear the back story of the main character, then the naivety makes sense. After that, the movie progresses slowly into something larger, something real in the character begins to take hold.Perhaps the best way to understand the film is as a hyper-real experience, it reflects life as it is lived, rather than how it is interpreted in movie-land, we don't know the plot, we over-react, do stupid things, and sex is ever present, as is the desperate need to make it, in a world whose randomness and ruthlessness looks a lot like Vegas when you take away the polite niceties of everyday society.Definitely worth seeing, an important movie.

Came perfectly fine. No scratches or damage. Plays as should. This movie is on my all time favorite list so I'm over the moon to finally own it on DVD

Showgirls behandelt das Thema Las Vegas Entertainment Naomi muss nach dem sie in Las Vegas gestrandet ist für Geld ausziehen bald geht sie zum Casting um für eine Grosse Show zu Tanzen sie bekommt denn Job und bald ist sie ganz oben nachdem sie die Haupt Tänzerin verletzt hat aber sie lernt auch das es nicht nur Licht gibt sondern auch Schatten ihre Beste Freundin wird auf einer Party vergewaltigt und alle schweigen dann rächt sie sich an einem der Vergewaltiger und tötet ihn dann verläßt sie Las Vegas

Je ne comprend vraiment pas les mauvaises critiques faites autour de ce film qui veut nous faire montrer une partie de la société américaine. Moi j'ai adoré ce milieu et l'actrice est superbe tant pour sa plastique, que pour son acting. Un grand film de Verhoeven, au même titre que Robocop, Basic Instinct ou encore Total recall. Je le note 7.5/10. Il se doit de figurer dans votre vidéothèque. A voir et à revoir.
