This Should Not Be Called a Gray Set --What a Deception.
I purchased this in good faith (it said "gray set"), and now I feel stupid because this listing omitted both a color chart and the names of the colors included in the set. But Amsterdam is a reputable company, right? Well, this is an utterly shoddy listing and here's why:Three of these paints are metallic. Would any serious artist expect a gray set of paint to have metallic paints. When you look at the photo, they appear gray. Well, they have black and white in them, but...There are two blacks and Payne's gray (a very dark, neutral one that doesn't look like Payne's). The blacks are very similar in value. There is one neutral gray (yes, an actual gray you would expect to find in a gray set). There are two light warm grays probably made up of titanium buff plus some black. Then there is titanium white, and a zinc white, very similar in value. So you can decide for yourself if this is what you'd expect from a gray set. This is not a tonal set, nor is it a set of grayish cool colors, and grayish warm colors. It's, in my humble opinion, a marketing trick. If you are looking for a monochromatic, scaled set, Golden used to sell a complete set of 10 or 12 numbered grays. You might have to buy them individually. Pebeo used to sell a grisaille set that I think they licensed to a painter (not sure here), but I haven't been able to find it. Williamsburg has a monocrome set of oil paints (note that is also Golden). Other than that, I think one has to make their own. Note that Jerry's has an interesting set of colorized grays (not monochrome) that they sell in both oil and acrylic. It's more visually interesting and economical than this set.I just feel cheated by this purchase. I could've bought a large tube of black, titanium, and buff and made my own...I think Amazon and the seller of this item owe it to consumer's to add a proper color chart and name the colors included in this set. The fact that the seller omitted it is suspect at worst, but really, just annoying. I've had these for awhile, and got them out tonight to use, and what a disappointment. Metallic? Absurd!!!! At least Golden and Jerry's have a grip on what gray might mean.
