Convenient, affordable media tower
I don't do many reviews, but felt compelled because the current negative reviews focused on 'flimsiness' almost convinced me not to buy. It may not be the absolute sturdiest, but if you need a tall, narrow Media Tower that holds lots of CD's, you won't find any better out there for the price. I agree w/ the earlier review suggesting that following instructions to "lock in" shelves may help. In fact, any shelf bowing or flimsiness is actually less of an issue than the blocking of shelf space by overhanging side-edging strips, also noted by the same reviewer. Finally, a single, missing shelf support was quickly shipped out the next day after an Email to their Customer Support.

You DON'T get what you pay for.... You get pretty.
I bought one of these units a couple of years ago so here is the skinny....1) The unit looks great, from the front, standing at least two feet away if your vision is acceptable and three if your vision is excellent. The veneer is just a picture of wood so you don't want to get too close. Additionally, if any of the back shows from, let's say, around a corner, you can see particle board/MDF because the back is, you guessed it, unfinished. So, basically, you have to keep it 100% against a wall with no overhang in order to keep the "pretty" which is only "pretty" by comparison to those horrible black and grey units everyone loves so much these days.2) The unit is as described, in that the shelves are just as thick as they need to be in order to hold the specified number of SINGLE DVD boxes. They are deliberately thinner than bookshelf shelves to cut down on weight because you aren't supposed to use them for anything but "media". That having been said, if you try CDs, the shelves bow and things get a bit hairy. You may find yourself walking past the sunk-center shelves wondering "when's this thing going to break, anyway, and how loud will the crash be? Will it wake me up?" Also, if you have multiple double DVD sets or, dare I say, triples, you can't store those except on the very bottom shelf (because it rests firmly on the floor and, consequently, can't bow, crack or crash to the floor).3) DVD "sets", for example the television shows we are all so fond of, will not work except on the bottom shelf of the unit or lined across the very top.4) It is one of a very few units that are tall enough to be worth it, as tiny furniture is for people who don't plan ahead, BUT it must be anchored to a wall so that it won't kill you or maim a small child.5)You will not find this cheaper than $150 including shipping on the best sale day of the year, every other year, with a free shipping coupon and no tax. This, for a unit that has a usable space under 25 inches across. That is less than most comparably sized competitors on space and more, a lot more, on price. Furthermore, it is usually around $170 with shipping and tax included from most online vendors so... even more of that "'lot more" to feel stupid about later. So, now, for anyone who wants to keep reading, a bit more on cost benefit, for just another moment if you don't mind, since we all speak the language of coin: $170 for a pretty looking faux finish veneer (not real wood veneer, a picture of wood on a veneer that looks good but for $170 I think the owner of this company was high when he came up with this), for a unit that is basically 25 inches across... basically that translates to a situation in which you will need three units to cover the average space in the average collector's home (after fifteen years of collecting) which means you will need three units at $170 each to cover 75 inches plus the intervening dead spaces for maybe 85 inches of total wall space covered. To put plainly, you will need $510. Let's say that again. FIVE HUNDRED and TEN dollars. Now I know what you're thinking: "But they have a triple unit for a mere $380!" Well, yes. And it will be even less sturdy than this single unit because the shelves are all joined up to the same flimsy center "wood" dividers, populated by little plastic hooks fit into holes on either side of these pieces of "wood" run from top to bottom to hold all those shelves on either side and guess how much it hurts if that falls? And good luck cleaning it up. You can get any one of three other units online right now for half of that cost to fill the same space and it will only cost you a teeny, tiny, smidgen of the at-a-reasonable-distance "pretty".Keep looking unless you are, with all do respect, an older person with a small collection who has money to spare. If you don't meet all three of those criteria, this is a luxury that really isn't and will seem less and less like it ever was as time moves forward and you realize it is not serving your needs. For the same money, you could have an excellent handyman make you a built in for goodness sake.

My Favorie Media Storage Unit
Having already owned the white, three-columned version of this tower for over four years, I knew I liked it a lot. Believe it or not, I have pretty much filled up the three-columned version. The single provides the extra space I needed, while perfectly matching the existing shelf. This shelf can be put together in less than an hour, especially if you have two people. Two people are not required, however. The directions are extremely easy to follow. Take special care to read the notes thoroughly, as following them will ensure the tower is assembled correctly. This will prolong the life of the shelf. You may have read comments about the actual shelves being flimsy. They are. They’re not meant to hold anything beyond the designated media. I store CDs, blu-rays and DVDs. If only storing these, one should never need to worry about the shelves breaking. They can handle the weight. The only ding I have against these shelves and I have had this issue with the three-columned unit, is that they do indeed begin to sag over time. Improper assembly will certainly worsen this, but I now for a fact I assembled mine perfectly. It takes several years for this to begin to occur. I recommend turning the shelves every year or so.I cannot recommend this unit enough to someone looking for a cost effective, easy to assemble and very nice looking media storage unit. We have ours in the family/living room and they look fantastic. Eventually, I’ll likely end up purchasing another. Very glad Amazon has these.PROS:-Look-Cost-Ease of Assembly-Capacity for MediaCONS:-Flimsy Shelves-Andrew

Looks good and can handle plenty of CD's
Looks good and can handle plenty of CD's, DVD's, and VHS tapes. Slightly unbalanced (top heavy) on the carpet, so I needed to put plastic shims to help stabilize it.

great idea just not sturdy enough
I love the concept of the shelving unit but the shelves are not sturdy enough and are warping. I will need to add something for support if this is to last!

Ikea has nothing to worry about from this competitor.
The product is, as it was described. However, the quality of the product falls far short of my expectations. I was trying to match my 2 existing IKEA shelves as my DVD collection has grown and I needed a 3rd shelf. IKEA no longer carries the model I wanted so I had to look elsewhere--thus this purchase. It will suffice, but the value is about 1/3 of the actual price I paid. To make it more of an insult, they claim the list price was $242 and were selling it for $169. My IKEA shelves were $89 each--same size but considerably better quality. I will be keeping the shelf, because it does hold my excess DVD's. If I were to have seen it in person, I would not have bought it. It did assemble very easily, as had been described and it was well packaged--thus my "2" rating. The quality was the difference between a "2" and a "5".Do yourself a favor--visit an IKEA store or search them out online.
