Fred & Friends Fred CRACK A SMILE Smiley Face Breakfast Mold

I’ve tried using this mold several times and it’s been a bust every time until today.As usual, I oiled my pan (I use avocado oil), set the mold on the warm oil and moved it around to get a seal, put a bit more oil in the mold itself to try to get the inside edges, so the pancake mix wouldn’t stick. I put the stove on low and poured in my mix and an egg yolk. I spread it into the corners with a chopstick, and let it sit. After 5-7 min I realized I poured too much mix and the top just wasn’t solidifying enough to release and flip. The bottom was solid so I transferred it all, still in the mold, to the air fryer and set the air fryer to 350 for 5 min. It was PERFECT! I used the large end of a chopstick to slowly press out the pieces after it had cooled a bit.It’s more time consuming but my kiddo loves it!

We were able to get pretty good pancakes out of the molds. Our 4 year old recognized the brontosaurus and stegosaurus by name on our first try. Once I pointed out the other was a t-rex she got it.The pancake batter I make is pretty thick and it took some pushing to get it around the eyes and to fill in the dino heads. But it really wasn't hard. Make sure your pan is preheated and you have a good coating of butter/oil underneath. Make sure to let the pancake set (we gave it an extra 30 seconds). You also might want to make thin pancakes. When we flipped ours the back wasn't set, of course, and it kind of pooled out behind the dinos so they had a background. You can cut it off or leave it. It didn't really make an impact on the dinos.

4-year-old grandson loved the happy face pancake! Not difficult to make but err on the side of adding less and spread rather than too much. He had ONE REALLY FAT smiley faced pancake!!

This was purchased for my kiddos. Daddy makes the most awesome pancakes on the weekends, and we thought this would make pancakes more fun.The plates are cute (we bought both the space and dinosaur sets). The molds are easy to clean.BUTThere were no real directions included. I am used to food molds at least including their own compatible recipe; nope. We are trying to adapt our recipes - thinning them out, quite alot. So far, not a clean proposition. There is quite a bit of sticking which leads to poor release from the molds and subsequent misshappen badness.I think it’s great in concept, and a difficult subject to execute.

Unless you enjoy pain in the ass breakfasts and disappointed children, don’t buy this! It was a ridiculous production to get even 3 pancakes that looked like dinosaurs. I wasted a ton of batter, trying to make the pancakes resemble a dino. Plus, you have to burn your fingers when you try to flip the pancakes. The little tab to pull off the mold is too small to pull while wearing an oven mitt. Because only half of the pancake is cooked, it doesn’t push out of the mold so that you can flip them without ruining it. I tried making eggs in the hopes that this wasn’t a complete waste. As pictured, I don’t even know what in the hell I put on my plate. It was a hot mess. I strongly suggest finding another option. 😕

Fun for grand children.

Not easy to use at all. Almost never works and it take too long to cook some eggs if you pretend to cook them evenly.

It’s worth persevering with this. The first time I added too much pancake mix and had the heat too high. Once I had tried a few more times and worked out that if you add way less pancake batter than you think, and are patient with a lower heat, you end up with cute dino pancakes. My 4 yo loves them. He also loves the plate and refuses to eat anything else from it other than Dino pancakes.

Sent as a Christmas present for my 12 year old nephew who likes experimenting in the kitchen. He's enjoyed using it and it has definitely caused some merriment at breakfast!

Bought for pancakes. Not the best outcome. Not great when used for eggs either. Not really worth the money.
