Yes, they can be clamped to either end of a 4" metal duct to make a splice. As to hooking two of them to a portable AC unit, that depends: long runs of ducting will decrease the air flow, possibly too much for the AC unit to handle. You should ask LG directly if 40 feet of duct is too much.

Q: Is the vinyl translucent at all? I need something that doesn't allow any light in.

This product allows light into it, no doubt about it. It is just thin plastic sheet stretched over a wire coil.
