Excellent Tool for the Elevator Phobe who is ready to get better
After a lifelong fear of elevators, I have decided that too much of my life had been limited by avoiding those ubiquitous moving rectangles. I got a recommendation for a therapist who specializes in phobia treatment and he recommended this book. I am only 1/3 through but have already been in an elevator more times this week than in the past two years combined. I still have a lot of elevator situations I must work up to but something about this book makes me feel confident and hopeful. I especially like that the book seems to understand the level of my terror and some of my more specific fears and contexts that make them worse. Heck it has a whole chapter essentially devoted to my fear. It is nice to know my irrational thinking is not unique and can be mitigated. I highly recommend this book despite not yet having finished my read or full course of "recovery".

This book worked for me
A terrific book, which I recommend highly to anyone who wants to address and get rid of any phobias they may have acquired. This book explains how phobias are created, that they're a somewhat random by-product of stress. This goes a long way in de-stigmatizing them, and putting one in a good frame of mind for serious treatment. I found it extraordinarily helpful, especially in conjunction with seeing a behavioral therapist. In about 1-2 years, I lost my recently-developed phobia of wind which was having a very negative impact on my enjoyment of my sailboat. I stopped seeing the therapist, but continued using the book, and eventually overcame my fear of heights. I had suffered from this phobia most of my adult life. It had gotten so bad that not only could I not sit in the front row of a theater balcony, but I couldn't stand to see other people near the edge of a height. It definitely interfered with sightseeing while on vacation. But I can now work on a ladder with relative ease.

Interesting reading.
I didn't realize that this is really for a therapist and not the patient. Still pretty good reading.

Excellent resource
I use this in a primary care setting and find it the nicest resource I have used. The writing is clear and the language is simple and easily understood. It is nicely organized with well designed homework sheets that can be copied from the book or downloaded from the Oxford University Press US website. I have used many resources over the years and this has been the most effective for the broadest range of clients.

Very good information.
My psycologist that was working with me suggested this book to help me overcome my fear of needles and surgery knives. The book has very worthwhile information. When the day gets closer to undergo surgery for a knee/s replacement I will again take it out and do the excercises to prepare me, and lessen my anxiety.I would recommend this workbook to anyone who has a needle knife phobia.

Excellent self-help book
I'm a psychologist and I would recommend that book to clients wanting to manage their phobia(s) by themselves or with the support of a therapist. The language level is simple and the structure is comprehensible.
