Q: Are the bowls sitting in a ring (appears that way in the pic) or do you have to remove the entire assembly (wing nut) to remove the bowl?

Yes, the bowl sits snugly in the ring. However, I found within a day or two that my dog playing with the bowl was enough to break one of the welds for the ring to the clamp assembly- which pretty much made this useless as a crate bowl. The clamp also didn't attach very securely to my crate. It has only a single wing nut and the clamp pieces are flat. My dog had it dislodged within a day. I bought another model with two wing nuts that has been MUCH better and held up for weeks now.

Q: Can you just remove the bowl

Yes, as stated in review you can lift bowl from metal ring without having to reattach clamp to cage. Very convenient.

Q: Would there be enough space to attach this to a steel barred cage? Would it hold without horizontal bars? Specifically looking for the Carlson Combi.

The metal bracket closest to the bowl does NOT turn on mine. I was able to make it work on horizontal bars by putting a large metal washer behind that bracket and in front of the inside bars and then attached the other bracket piece and wing nut on the outside. Hope that helps!!

Q: Can this be used on plastic travel crates?

Jacqueline I don't see why not. It has a long bolt welded to the holder and you slide it through the bars of the crate and tighten with the provided wingnut. Super simple. My dog loves it! Sue
