To be quite honest, my kids grew up playing this game and are now in their 20s. When we hang and play games this one often comes out and the competitive hackles are raised. They all learned to count money with this game and now they want to be the first to earn $20. My daughter has also purchased a copy for her classroom where she teaches. Loads of fun.

Q: Is this too simple for an 11 year old boy?

I'd say it depends on their math skills but the numbers they r working with is under $20. I think the goal is to get to 20. If they understand how many coins equal a dollar and how to easily convert coins and dollars then yes it might be too easy. But its multiple players game. It could still be fun for them. Also think about how much they like board games. But it is simple. Roll the dice and each space tells u whether u earn or lose money. There r other cards also that I can't really remember. But it's a simple game. I played it with 5 th graders before and they enjoyed it. Kids like pretend money.
