This book is is good it shouldn't be missed!!
This is Tami Hoag at her best. Ms Hoag writes in so many genre. This one is murder, Gore, a little romance and a totally surprise ending. It is Kovac and Liska at their finest. It begins with horror with a multilateral naked teenager popping out of a car trunk in a freeway accident. It gets better from there (or goes downhill you might say) with lots of action and suspense. You won't want to miss this action-packed novel, especially as Liska deals with the dramas of 2 teenage sons. Watch in future novels to see how she handles the hurdles of teenage family life simultaneous with being a detective on the police force.

Too good to put down
Wow! What a great book. A non-stop read, from start to finish. This was about two different stories wrapped up into one. There are two murders and so many suspects. Who I thought it was to begin with was not who it ended up being. There were so many twists and turns in this book that it kept you wondering. The ending was even more of a surprise. I never once thought of this being the person responsible for Penny Gray’s death. This was a book that I found very hard to put down. I love Tami Hoag’s writing, but this was one of the best books I have read. I would give it a ten star.

This is a "Page turner.". I read it in 2 nights. couldn't put it down. And what a strange culmination of events.
This is a page turner. I couldn't put it down. I've read lots of Tami Hoag but this was a stunning book full of gritty work by the detectives. The nether world of teenagers made this a highly provocative book. But the surprise endings were something else. The characters were well fleshed out and I hated the people who were terrible. And loved those who were different. The cops were believable and highly motivated. A must read.

An easy read, not my favorite by this author
I've been a fan of Tami Hoag for quite a while and I first read a Sam Kovak/Nicki Liska novel probably five or six years ago (likely more). She develops good characters and the plots are usually enough to keep me reading, however this one just was not one of my favorites. I could be just tired of the repeating characters - sometimes I do find Kovak and Liska to a be a little bit to cliche - or this story just might not have been her best work.I found this book to drag in places and by the end was finishing it just to finish without really caring what the outcome was or how the story wrapped up.That being said, it's a pretty easy read and I would say it's great for a vacation type book. Something to read while relaxing but not something you have to really focus on in order to get the most out of it. I'm not swearing off Hoag by any means. I actually hope she comes out with some new books soon, as usually I find her work to be pretty good.

Tense, well written, multi-layered mystery
The 9th Girl features two Minneapolis police detectives, Sam Kovac and Nikki Liska. Both are dedicated officers, motivated by finding justice for their victims. Kovacs is single, a bit of the stereotypical curmudgeon, and lonely. Liska is the divorced mother of two teenagers, juggling the multiple demands of work, motherhood, and money. The 9th Girl is the newest installment in a series, and starts off with an attention grabbing scene when the driver of a hired car, driving somewhat distractedly on New Years Eve, suddenly sees a zombie pop out of the trunk of a car in front of him--and then hits and kills the zombie. However, The 9th Girl is not by any means a zombie novel, and it turns out that the zombie is actually a teen-aged girl who has been brutally tortured and maimed. This terrible scene opens what becomes a story with multiple themes. Is the teen-aged girl victim of a serial killer who has been preying on young girls? Perhaps, but why did so many people apparently hate this young girl? When Liska discovers that her oldest son knew the victim, the case becomes personal and even more frightening. The 9th Girl does a wonderful job of weaving several themes into a believable whole. Much of the story is told from the perspective of different characters---the police, the serial killer, and some of the teenagers involved. The transition between characters is smooth, and their voices so consistent, what is already a good plot is made great by these individual perspectives. This is the first Tami Hoag book I've read, I'm not sure how I missed her mystery stories, but I've just purchased the first Kovacs and Liska story so I can start at the beginning of this series.

Wow
A body falls out a car boot and is run over by a party limousine. Is it the work of a serial killer nicknamed Doc Holliday or is it someone else? This is the problem facing Kovac and Liska, two of Ms Hoag's characters from previous books and the detectives on the case. The investigation is competent and covers a lot of ground but what I particularly like about this book is the personal issues. Liska's son knew the murdered girl and is being bullied at school so it all gets mixed up together. Ms Hoag is masterful at portraying both Liska and Kyle's respective attitudes and the bullying incidents really hit home as what goes on every day all over the world. I think this is one of the best books I have read this year and would urge you to give it a try.

A good plot but insufficient detail
I was looking forward to the latest Kovac and Liska mystery. Unfortunately, this book doesn't quite meet expectations. A reasonable plot line, but the usual suspense is lacking and the storyline much weaker than previous outings for these detectives. The 'who dun it' elements are pretty obvious throughout. Various personal relationships are mentioned in passing, as though they will be expanded on later - but then Hoag doesn't come back to them. Overall although the book is easy to read but appears a bit rushed with insufficient detail.
