Encyclopedia Brown Cracks the Case

Our 7 yr old son loves this book series; we have bought MANY of them. This is each nights reading when we go to bed; we have to read at least 2 cases each evening, and figure out the clues. These books are fun reading, and actually challenge your kids to remember, comprehend and apply what they have read to figure out the answer to each case (and the solve for each case is found in the rear section of the book). Most boys would really enjoy these; I figure the girls would too, we just don't have any at our house to take a vote on that!!!

I guess it's not up to par with what kids want to read nowadays, but I'm sure many of us oldies appreciate it.

Encyclopedia Brownシリーズの第14作目。今回もこれまでの作品同様、10 件の様々な事件が、両親との夕食時の会話の中や、夏休みに車庫に開設する探偵事務所から展開するエピソードの中などで、見事に解き明かされていく。今回 Encyclopedia が解決する事件は：1) The Case of the Forgetful Jewel Thief： 記憶力に自信の無い稀代の宝石強盗が隠し場所を思い出すのに考えついた手とは？2) The Case of the Autographed Alice in Wonderland： 著者直筆のサイン入りの本だと Bugs に騙され大好きなトラのぬいぐるみと無理矢理交換させられてしまったMelissaちゃん。3) The Case of the Lemonade Stand：友人 Sonia の店で Bugs にはめられ窃盗の疑いをかけられた Encyclopedia と Sally。4) The Case of the Revolutionary Treasures： 町一番の怠け者 Wiford に無価値な古道具をつかまされた Mark。5) The Case of the Missing Butterfly Brooch： 叔母さんの形見を盗まれた愛蝶家の Monarch 夫人。友人の一人は覆面犯が逃げるところを見たと言うが…。6) The Case of the Counterfeit Dough： クッキー焼きコンテストの優勝候補者の中に残ったJoey。しかし、彼のクッキーの材料に…。7) The Case of the Astronaut Duck：宇宙に恋い焦がれる Moonboy に誘われ Encyclopedia たちは「宇宙飛行資金集め講演」へやって来た。ところがこの「宇宙飛行士」が…。8) The Case of the Lucky Catch： 元メジャーリーガー Ace の大邸宅へ招かれた Encyclopedia とその仲間たちだったが、チャンピオンゲームでの優勝を決め、チームメイト全員がサインをしたウイニングボールが盗まれ、その嫌疑が、あろうことか…。9) The Case of the Missing Money： 大工の Freeman さんとその仲間 2人の指導のもと、町の人々が家造りのボランティア。ところが昼食の最中、Freeman さんの作業服から寄付金が盗まれた。 大工 3人の作業服はお揃いの物で全く区別がつかない。さて、犯人は？10) The Case of the Stolen Confederate Stamps： 切手商 Sansbury 氏の切手が切手収集家年次総会会場で盗まれた。幸いその切手は保管室のカーペットの下から見つかったが…。本巻は、英語の得意な中3から高１ぐらいならば、時々辞書を引くだけで割と楽に読めそうだ。ストーリーもストレートで分かり易い。「真実は細部に宿る」というが、Encyclopedia Brown シリーズは、総じて実に細かい所に謎解きのヒントが隠されていることが多い（宿るのは真実ではなく神だというのが元々の発言らしいが…）。
