Valuable context and perspectives
Excellent for providing context for past and present of Kashmir, however it is defined, and for complexity of the related issues.

Broad Brush View of Kashmir though a bit shallow in terms of depth
Compared to other tomes, this book is quite basic in terms of coverage and at times the background details esp. the thinking of various actors in 1947 and the happenings of the 1960s etc, is a bit shallow and leaves details wanting.

Informative and Inspiring
Dr. Snedden makes an invaluable contribution to global betterment with his “Understanding Kashmir and Kashmiris.” He meticulously lays out the historical foundations of the regional strife, while accessibly highlighting the key people and events that have shaped it. Dr. Snedden deftly balances a wealth of detail against a compelling narrative. His tome has the content richness of an academic historical textbook, while reading more like a modern ‘whodunnit?” But it is in his ending that he truly shines, inspiring the reader with a vision of the peace that could be attained, and mapping for regional politicians the key steps to getting there.

Dull
This book has some value in its coverage of ancient history and sociology of Kashmir. However, I have found other books to be more insightful.

Deeply Researched book on Kashmir
Understanding Kashmir and Kashmiris gives the readers a brief overview of the history of Jammu and Kashmir. It talks about the various important rulers that have ruled it and how they shaped Kashmir. The journey from being a Sikh empire to a Dogra and then part of Independent India. How the recent two rulers before it was made a part of India ruled Jammu and Kashmir. To what geographical extent they ruled, and what were the agreed or disputed boundaries with the neighbouring countries before India and Pakistan came into being? How the British drew the map/ boundaries of Jammu and Kashmir and were they accepted by the neighbouring China.Understanding Kashmir and Kashmiris is a well researched book about the Kashmir conflict taking the readers through the political history of Kashmir. A fine read to understand the Kashmir conflict.

Let the people decide
A wide ranging account of Jammu and Kashmir, and how the 'Kashmir dispute' continues to poison Indo-Pakistan relations. In all this, the writer says, the wishes of the people have been consistently ignored by both sides.

The big game and impact on Kashmir
You would get to know history from British view . Interesting part for me was how bigger geo politics played lot of role in history of Kashmir i.e British and Russia. Also never had got so much details of how Dogra rule started and ended . Lot of interesting details . On negative side, I found many details getting repeated which was disappointing.
