Oprah recommended must-read
When a book starts with the gruesome murders of 16 people from one family, you know it's going to be a hard one. I read many reviews that said this book painted Mexico in a very negative light and maybe the whole migration process for immigrants from Mexico into America isn't as intense (or maybe it's more intense) as the book makes it out to be, but put that aside and you've got a story that keeps you gripped. Right from the start, I felt every emotion that Lydia and Luca felt as they tried to come to terms with the deaths of their entire family and then as they left them all behind without saying a proper goodbye so they could escape their impending doom in Mexico to make the arduous, scary, uncertain journey from Acapulco all the way across the border into the US. The characters they meet, the pain they go through, the tears they shed, the hardships they face and the fear they become accustomed to come to life and you feel it all as if you were right there with them. I've never rooted for characters (and not just the protagonists) more. When they finally get the freedom and peace they deserve, I found myself breathing a sigh of relief. I've lived their journey and dreamt their stories the last few nights and I can now sleep in peace tonight knowing that Lydia, Luca, Soledad and Rebeca are safe and on their way to attempting to live their lives again.

Your struggles are 0 compared to them.
American dirt makes you relate with the pain of refugees to a whole another level. Their sufferings, the struggle, the strength, the scare, the loot, the molestation seems like their only life. Give it a read and you will turn out with an aching heart of gold.
