Metaphysical thriller
Don't get put off by the series of seemingly unrelated beginnings: it all fits together eventually and the ending explains all. The book follows a 'thriller' format but is actually more about human psychology, but not in a 'heavy' way - there is much wit and the style is often beautifully lyrical. Sub-texts abound: e.g. state-defined identity versus what we really are; cultural consciousness and how it relates to collective consciousness; our relationship to time and space. The work is also full of cliff-hangers with a very unpredictable ending.Tom Inglewood
